Pipe Bomb Suspect Captured in Montana

The suspect in a series of pipe bombings targeting law enforcement officers is in custody this afternoon in Montana.

New information just in from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office details the arrest of 25-year-old Laurence Stewart who is wanted in connection to the attempted murder of two law enforcement officers.

Police say the suspect was captured in Montana but not after a police pursuit were the suspect is said to have lobbed homemade explosives from his car at pursuing officers.

When cornered, the suspect fled on foot armed with a handgun, according to a press release.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Fredericksburg Police Department, the Virginia State Police, the Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Fredericksburg Fire Marshal’s has confirmed capture of Laurence Alan Stewart II, wanted in Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg for numerous charges to include Attempted Capital Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer. Stewart was taken into custody in the State of Montana.

Preliminary information received from Montana is that a pursuit ensued which resulted in a number of pipe bombs being thrown at pursuing law enforcement officers. Stewart’s vehicle was disabled by law enforcement officers. Stewart left his car and ran on foot, armed with a handgun. He was taken into custody. At this time there is no information that any shots were fired during his capture.

This has been a rapidly developing incident and we will have an update as more information becomes available.

Public safety officials recently gathered at Dunkin’ Donuts locations from Stafford County to Manassas to meet with community members in two separate events fostering engagement and conversation.

In Stafford County, Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins celebrated the grand reopening of their Next Generation restaurant on Warrenton Road with a unique community event on Saturday, February 8. Brown-Page, a retired federal senior manager and mediation expert, brings extensive experience in human and community relations. Her appointment follows the censure of Stafford Supervisor Monica Gary, accused of political maneuvering in Becelia’s removal.
