Stewart Proposes 2 Paid February Holidays for County Employees

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — First, Prince William Corey Stewart said he wanted to cut both President’s Day and Columbus Day from the list of paid holidays for county employees.

Those are two of 12 paid holidays bestowed on county employees, and cutting them would save money and put the county’s employee calendar more on par with that of the federal government.

Today, Stewart changed his position and said employees should be given two separate holidays in February – one day to celebrate the birth of George Washington and the other to celebrate the birth of Abraham Lincoln.

Workers would report to work annually on Columbus Day which falls in October, under Stewart’s proposal. Employees currently have that day off.

Stewart’s proposal will be considered as officials on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors mull over the next year’s county budget.

Supervisors Marty Nohe and Maureen Caddigan said they couldn’t support the idea as it stands right now.

Stewart supports a flat tax for county residents, and his is one of several budget proposals that will be weighed before a final budget document is voted on and approved in April.
