All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Prince William County received more than $64.6 million in lottery funds for K-12 education in fiscal year 2024. In the same fiscal year, the lottery made up approximately 10% of the state’s total school budget.

Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today that the Virginia Lottery's fiscal year 2024 profits exceeded $934 million, the highest in its 36-year history. All profits from the Lottery go towards supporting K-12 public education in the Commonwealth.

Since 1999, Virginia Lottery profits have generated over $12 billion for Virginia's K-12 public schools. 10% of the Virginia K-12 education budget comes from the Lottery. The record profits in FY24 were driven by over $5.5 billion in sales, the highest ever. Tickets were purchased at over 5,300 businesses and online, and retailers earned $142 million in commissions and bonuses. Of that $5.5 billion, players received $4.2 billion in prizes, with 77 cents returned for every dollar spent. The Lottery also recorded a low administrative cost rate of 3.8%, which will be finalized after a standard audit by the Auditor of Public Accounts.

Virginia Lottery: “I almost fell to the ground. It was amazing!”

“That’s how Michael Brosnan of Stafford recalled the moment he discovered he had one of the five $1 million winning tickets in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle.”

“He said the first inkling he had was when his father called and said the Virginia Lottery just announced that one of the $1 million winning tickets was bought at Paddy’s 32 Steakhouse & Pub on Center Street in Stafford. That’s where Michael had bought his raffle tickets. Then he checked the winning ticket numbers. Ticket #007094 was the big winner!”

“The other four million-dollar winning tickets were bought in Arlington, Fredericksburg, Leesburg, and Manassas. Seven tickets won $100,000 each. They were bought in Henrico, Lynchburg, Manassas, Poquoson, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Yorktown. An additional 1,000 tickets each won $500.”

“Mr. Brosnan said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.”

Winning tickets were also sold in Fredericksburg and Manassas.

Virginia Lottery: “When Marie Edwards went to the CVS to pick up a prescription, she also bought a $1 Million Spectacular ticket from the Virginia Lottery. When she scratched the ticket the next day, the Stafford County woman discovered she had just won the game’s $1 million top prize.”

There were some lucky Powerball winners from Virginia, albeit none in our backyard.

During the 41 drawings of the jackpot run that began in August and ended with the world-record $2.04 billion drawing this morning, Tuesday, November 8, 2022, sales of Powerball tickets in Virginia generated an estimated $42.3 million in profit. By law, all of that profit goes to K-12 public education in Virginia.

In this drawing alone, more than 303,000 Powerball tickets bought in Virginia won prizes ranging from $4 to $100,000. One ticket won $100,000, and three tickets won $50,000 each.

The $100,000 winning ticket was bought at:

  • Smile Gas, 5201 South Amherst Highway in Madison Heights.

The three $50,000 winning tickets were bought at:

  • Publix, 4660 Monticello Avenue in Williamsburg
  • 7-Eleven, 2712 North Armistead in Hampton
  • Go-Mart, 950 East Main Street in Wytheville

The drawing was delayed 10 hours due to one of the 48 participating lotteries needing additional time to process its sales and play data. As soon as the required pre-draw procedures were securely completed by the one outstanding lottery, the drawing proceeded at 8:57 a.m. today.

The winning numbers were 10-33-41-47-56, and the Powerball number was 10. One ticket nationwide matched all six numbers to win the jackpot. That ticket was bought in California. The jackpot is now $20 million for Wednesday’s drawing.

Powerball tickets can be purchased at any of more than 5,300 Virginia Lottery retailers statewide or online at valottery.com. You can also play Powerball using the Virginia Lottery app. Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Tickets can be bought up until 10:00 pm on the evening of the drawing.

Someone who purchased a Powerball ticket in Haymarket won during a previous drawing on Saturday, November 5. No one hit the jackpot in that drawing, however.

Would you throw away $258,000? Someone may be on the verge of doing just that.

A Cash 5 with EZ Match ticket matched all five numbers in the March 16 drawing to win a $258,000 jackpot. Since then, no one has come forward with that winning ticket to claim the prize.

By law, winning tickets in Virginia expire 180 days after the drawing. That means the ticket will become worthless at 5 p.m (close of business) on Monday, September 12.

The ticket was bought at Giant Food at 317 Worth Avenue in Stafford.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 10-21-27-29-38.

Unclaimed prizes, by law, go to Virginia’s Literary Fund, which provides low-interest loans to localities for public school construction, renovations, and technology upgrades.

Whoever has the winning ticket should contact the Virginia Lottery or present the winning ticket at a Virginia Lottery customer service center or prize zone.

Cash 5 with EZ Match features a rolling jackpot, starting at a minimum of $100,000. If nobody matches all five winning numbers, the jackpot increases for the next drawing. The odds of matching all five numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 749,398.

In addition, a player who spends an extra dollar for EZ Match receives five randomly generated numbers with a prize of up to $500 associated with each number. If those numbers match any of the numbers on the ticket for the drawing, the player wins that prize – even before the drawing is held.
