VDOT: “The Virginia Department of Transportation will reopen the original Interstate 95 northbound bridge over the Rappahannock River in mid-November, doubling capacity in the Fredericksburg area ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.”

“Starting early Thursday, Nov. 16, travelers will be able to use both I-95 northbound bridges over the Rappahannock River. At that time, traffic will be divided between local and through lanes, similar to I-95 southbound between exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) in Stafford County and exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg.”

I-95 Northbound: Exit 130 (Route 3) to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway): Monday – Friday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. I-95 northbound will be reduced to one lane each evening between the interchanges for construction with I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project and the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

• Exit 130 (Route 3) to Exit 133 (Route 17): Tuesday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m. Work zone to reopen the original I-95 northbound Rappahannock River Bridge.
• Tuesday Night: 8 p.m. – One lane closed, 9 p.m. – Two lanes closed, 10 p.m.- Off-ramp to Route 17 at exit 133 closed, detour to exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).
• Wednesday: 4:30 a.m. – One local lane of I-95 northbound will open from the Rappahanock River to exit 133. The off-ramp to exit 133 will also reopen.
  8 p.m. – One through lane will close, 9 p.m. – I-95 northbound will be reduced to one lane over the river to exit 133, 10 p.m. – Brief, intermittent stops will occur at the on-ramp from Route 3 to I-95 northbound at exit 130, this ramp will not close.
• Thursday: 4:30 a.m. – Access to 95 Express Lanes modified. Local traffic from Route 3 or Route 17 will not be able to access the northbound 95 Express Lanes until a new flyover ramp opens in December. 6 a.m. – All six northbound lanes across the river will open to traffic.
• Exit 133 (Route 17) to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway): Wednesday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Single lane closure between interchanges for 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension construction.
• Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) to Exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville): Monday?–?Friday,?9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Single lane closure at mile markers 140-142. Noise barrier construction on the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension.

Spotsylvania County: Route 1 Southbound: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Single southbound lane closure on Route 1 between the intersections of Hood Drive and Market Street. Construction of road improvements under permit for future U.S. Veterans Health Administration clinic.

• Massaponax Church Road: Monday – Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Paving between Route 1 and Hickory Ridge Road. Flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone.

• Exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) Off-Ramps Closure and Detour: Sunday – Thursday, 11 p.m. – 4 a.m. I-95 southbound off-ramps to Route 17 northbound to Warrenton and Route 17 Business to Falmouth will close each evening with a detour. City of Fredericksburg: Route 1 and Route 3 Ramps: Sunday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Alternating lane closures. Travelers may encounter brief overnight delays on Route 1 and Route 3 in the City of Fredericksburg as crews install pavement markings following recent paving. Work will be underway on Sunday through Thursday evening, ending early Friday morning.

• Route 1: Sunday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Alternating lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound for pavement marking work between Hazel Run Bridge and Cowan Boulevard.

Route 1 in Woodbridge, between Featherstone Road and Mary’s Way, is now six lanes.

The wider road section is the last in three road projects that began in the early 2000s to widen Route 1 in Woodbridge from four to six lanes between Neabsco Creek to the Occoquan River. l

Officials cut the ribbon on the two-mile Featherstone Road to Mary’s Way segment on Thursday, October 26, 2023.

The work was completed in three segments: Between Neabsco Creek and Featherstone Road, between Marys Way and Occoquan River, and Featherstone Road to Mary’s Way, respectively.

Northern Virginia Transportation Authority: “NVTA invested nearly $64 million to bring this portion of the Route 1 Widening to fruition.”

Project Benefits:

“Reduced congestion: The recently completed project has improved the existing Route 1 segment (Featherstone to Marys Way). The improvements include the widening from four to six lanes, a shared-use path and sidewalks ensuring a seamless flow of all modes of traffic and alleviating congestion challenges in the region. As the region’s population continues to grow, these additional lanes and improved access to various transportation options within the Route 1 corridor are vital.”

“Improved safety: New and improved safety features, including medians, upgraded intersections, and advanced signalization, guarantee the safety of all road users. Pedestrian signals are strategically placed to ensure safe crossings.”

“Improved active transportation options: A 10-foot shared-use path and a five-foot sidewalk now run alongside the route, providing cyclists and pedestrians with dedicated spaces. These additions will encourage active transportation, promoting a healthier lifestyle for NoVA residents and reducing reliance on motor vehicles.”

“Enhanced regional connectivity: This project improves the connectivity between Prince William County, Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria through improved traffic flow. Additionally, it will improve access to VRE trains via Rippon and Woodbridge Stations.”

Prince William police: “Now that daylight is fading earlier, it can be difficult for drivers to notice pedestrians and those on bicycles, so the Prince William County Police Department invites residents to be ‘Street Smart’ and aware of pedestrian and bicyclist safety.”

“The “Street Smart” education and enforcement campaign, which runs through Nov. 19, 2023, aims to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle crashes with motor vehicles.”

A total of 26 people were killed on county roads in 2022.

VDOT: “The public is invited to learn more about a project to install a modular roundabout at the intersection of Route 1969 (Banks Ford Parkway) and Route 1968 (Celebrate Virginia Parkway) in Stafford County, and to provide comment on the proposed design.”
