VDOT: “Route 3 traffic entering I-95 northbound in Fredericksburg has begun traveling in the northbound local lanes, which are now fully open between exit 130 (Route 3) and exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) in Stafford.”
“Drivers entering northbound I-95 from Route 3 now travel across the original Rappahannock River bridge in the local lanes.”
“North of the river, travelers in the local lanes can use the off-ramp at exit 133 to access Route 17 northbound or Route 17 Business or continue driving north to merge with the through travel lanes.”
“Construction on the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project will continue through May 2024, with a focus on the Route 17 area in Stafford. Crews will finish building turn lanes, installing sidewalk and drainage systems.”
“Click here to see the ultimate traffic configuration on Route 17.”
VDOT: “To make Thanksgiving travel more enjoyable and, most importantly, safe, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be suspending many highway work zones and lifting most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon on Wednesday, Nov. 22 until noon on Monday, Nov. 27.”
While lane closures will be lifted in most locations, motorists may encounter semi-permanent work zones that remain in place during this time. Check VDOT’s Weekly Lane Closures and Travel Advisories for the latest travel alerts in your area and around the state.
“Based on the traffic data, periods of heavy congestion were most likely to occur from mid-morning to evening on Tuesday and throughout the day on Wednesday and Sunday, with pockets of congestion on Saturday near shopping destinations. Some notable areas are:
“I-95 northbound and southbound in the Fredericksburg area: Since this map uses historical data it does not consider the recent extension of express lanes from south of Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) in Stafford to Route 17 (Exit 133), or the addition of northbound lanes at the Rappahannock River this week. However, based on the general traffic shifts in the post-pandemic period, with higher traffic volumes during weekdays preceding holidays – heavy congestion may still be expected during the periods mentioned above in the Fredericksburg area.”
OnniRide: “In observance of Thanksgiving, OmniRide buses will operate as follows:
- All OmniRide bus services – no service on Thursday, 11/23
- No OmniRide Express service on Friday, 11/24
- Metro Express, Local and East-West Express will operate regular service on Friday, 11/24
- For off-route trips on Friday, November 24, contact Customer Service at 703-730-6664 by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22.”

“From the 14th Street Bridge to the terminus near Route 17, Transurban will be conducting tests ahead of the planned opening of new access points at Russell Road and Courthouse Road in Stafford County, as well as the new Opitz Boulevard ramp that will replace the Dale Boulevard ramp in Prince William County.”
