Transurban North America: "Roads and Bridges Magazine has announced Transurban’s 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project among the Top 10 Best Roads of 2023."

"The Extension’s main roadway opened in August 2023, with the project’s full opening tonight at 10 p.m. adding more access points throughout Stafford County to bring the Express Lanes benefit to more Virginians."

"The $670 million public-private partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and joint-venture Branch Flatiron completes the longest reversible roadway in the United States, adding ten miles to the 95 and 395 Express Lanes."

VDOT crews on re-freeze watch

VDOT: “Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will patrol Interstate 95 and state-maintained roads across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula Tuesday morning ahead of the commuter rush hour to treat for icy, slick road conditions that may develop from wet pavement refreezing overnight.”

“Crews will focus especially on elevated surfaces more likely to experience icing, such as ramps, bridges, and overpasses, which have lower surface temperatures.”

Temps will drop below freezing tonight, states the National Weather Service. Here’s the forecast:

Tonight
Clear, with a low around 25. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.

Tuesday
Sunny, with a high near 47. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

Tuesday Night
Clear, with a low around 29. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office: “A 38-year-old Spotsylvania woman caused an auto accident late last night due to reckless driving and alcohol.”

“On December 7th at approximately 5:47 p.m. Deputy C.M. Sterne responded to the intersection of Banks Ford Parkway and Celebrate Virginia Parkway for an auto accident. It was discovered the first driver had the right of way and proceeded through the intersection. The second driver also assumed she had the right of way and proceeded through the intersection. Any physics professor will tell you two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.”

Stafford deputies have made more than 430 DUI arrests so far in 2023. Last year, deputies arrested 456, said sheriff’s spokesman Ryan Wilbur.

The Center Square: “Federal funding for a critical rail project supporting a new bridge crossing the Potomac River connecting the District of Columbia and Virginia has been secured.”

“The announcement was made Thursday in Arlington. A group of bipartisan lawmakers from Virginia celebrated the $729 million funding to support the completion of the new Long Bridge, which is anticipated to ease rail traffic bottlenecks, expand freight capacity and improve commuter rail capability.”

  • Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) to Exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville): Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Single lane closure at mile markers 140-142 for noise barrier installation. Part of the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.
  • Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. and Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m. Single lane closure at mile markers 140-142 for 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project construction.

Construction continues to widen Route 17 in this area as part of the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Spotsylvania County: “Route 1 Northbound and Southbound at Southpoint Parkway: Monday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. Northbound and southbound single lane closures on Route 1 between Southpoint Parkway and Pacific Drive.

  • Route 1 Northbound and Southbound at Route 606: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Alternating single lane closures on Route 1 near the Morris Road/Mudd Tavern Road intersection. Paving work for the Route 606 widening project.
  • Southpoint Parkway: Monday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. Single lane closure on Southpoint Parkway at the Route 1 intersection.

Virginia State Police: “The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 9:06 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, on Interstate 95 in Prince William County.”

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a black Toyota Tundra, driven by Lloyd R. Felder, 69, of Triangle, Va., pulled off onto the right, northbound shoulder of I-95 at the 158 mile marker [Prince William Parkway]. Felder then exited his vehicle and stepped into the northbound travel lane where he was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer.”

“The tractor-trailer was unable to avoid striking Felder, who died at the scene.”

“The crash is being investigated as a possible suicide.”

Fairfax County police: “At 12:24 a.m. on Dec. 5th, officers responded to the intersection of Lee Highway and Clifton Road in Centreville. Officers found a 2013 BMW M3 and a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with severe damage. The driver of the Hyundai Sonata, Sohail Iqbal, 30, of Manassas, was declared deceased by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue at the scene.”

“The driver of the BMW was taken to the hospital for injuries considered life-threatening.”

“This is the 19th fatal vehicular crash in the County to date in 2023. In 2022 year-to-date there were 19 fatal vehicular crashes.”
