Spotsylvania Sheriff’s office responded to a domestic violence report that resulted in an officer shooting.

On October 25, 2024 at 1:00am Sergeant R. Lewis located a single vehicle crash while on patrol in the 6600 block of Lawyers Rd. The vehicle was traveling east on Lawyers Rd when it lost control striking a guardrail then overturned down an embankment.
The driver and sole occupant, of the 1999 Honda Accord was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was identified as Michael Mitchell Jr., 49 of Louisa County.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Mitchell.
On October 26, 2024 at 2:45pm deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash in the area of Courthouse Road bypass and Old Battlefield Blvd. involving multiple vehicles.
Preliminary investigation and witness accounts show that a 2006 GMC pickup driven by a 28-year-old Spotsylvania County man who was towing a utility trailer with mulch was traveling east on Courthouse Rd bypass when it struck the rear of a 2016 RAV 4 SUV driven by a 61-year-old female from Staunton, VA. The GMC pickup pushed the RAV4 several hundred feet down the road before dislodging.
The pickup continued east on the parkway and then crossed the center median striking several trees before it went into oncoming traffic and struck a 2012 Honda Civic head-on. The impact caused the Honda to overturn.
The driver of the Honda, a 68-year-old female from Spotsylvania was transported to an area trauma center in critical condition. The passenger of the Honda died at the scene and was identified as Mary Francis Carter, 91 years-of age also from Spotsylvania.
The driver of the RAV 4 was transported to an area hospital, treated and released. The driver of the GMC pickup is in serious condition and being treated at a trauma center in Richmond, VA.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team. No charges have been placed at this time and will be reviewed at the completion of the investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those involved.

On October 18, 2024, deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Shepherds Road, resulting in the death of the driver, a 49-year-old male. The incident is under investigation by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team.

On October 18, 2024 at 08:15am deputies responded to a single vehicle crash in the 3900 block of Shepherds Rd. The driver and sole occupant, of the 2021 Chevrolet sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased was identified as Marcus Dwayne Coleman, 49 of Spotsylvania. The crash is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim.
Two burglaries in the Spotsylvania Courthouse area were reported recently, leading to a suspect being charged after detectives executed a search warrant in the Spotslee Subdivision. James Edward Romick Jr., 47, faces multiple counts related to the burglaries at Spotsylvania Middle School and Revive Ministries, where stolen items, including a firearm, were recovered.

Two burglaries in the Spotsylvania Courthouse area were reported in the last week. Detectives quickly developed a suspect and made an arrest yesterday after a search warrant was executed at a home in the Spotslee Subdivision. The first burglary was reported on October 4th at Spotsylvania Middle School. Video surveillance showed the suspect entering the school just before 10PM. The suspect took several items belonging to teachers and the school. On October 9th, Revive Ministries located in the 9100 block of Old Battlefield Blvd reported a burglary to their church. The suspect took musical items and electronics. Detectives with the help of our Crime Analyst developed a suspect and a search warrant was executed at a home on Hampton Drive yesterday afternoon. Detectives located numerous stolen items from both burglaries along with a stolen gun that was reported in the Courthouse area. James Edward Romick Jr, 47 of Spotsylvania was arrested and charged with 2 counts of burglary with the intent to commit larceny, possession of a firearm by convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm. He was incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under NO bond.

On September 17, 2024, Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott C. Hook concluded that the lethal force used by Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Deputy Lieutenant Daniel Harris during a domestic disturbance on June 30, 2024, was justified. The deputy, an 18-year veteran, fired his weapon after observing a man pointing a firearm at a woman. The male suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. An internal investigation confirmed that the deputy followed all department policies. The Virginia State Police assisted in the review of the incident.

UPDATE: Deputy cleared in officer involved shooting
On September 17, 2024 Fauquier Commonwealth’s Attorney, Scott C. Hook provided his opinion for the officer involved shooting incident that occurred in Spotsylvania County on June 30, 2024. CA Scott C. Hook found the deputy’s use of lethal force was justified. The complete report from CA Hook is attached. An additional separate internal investigation was conducted by this agency and showed that the involved Deputy followed all department policies and procedures. The Deputy was identified as Lieutenant Daniel Harris, an eighteen-year veteran. We appreciate the Virginia State Police for their assistance in reviewing the criminal investigation.

On June 30th at approximately 03:16 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the 10400 block of Spotswood Drive for a domestic disturbance involving a firearm. Once on scene deputies observed an adult male armed with a firearm pointing it at an adult female. As a result, one the responding deputies fired his department issued firearm striking the subject. Deputies immediately rendered aid to the individual until Spotsylvania Fire-EMS arrived. The 38-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene. No physical injuries were sustained to the female. At the request of the Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation will be assisting us in the investigation. The deputy involved in this incident has been placed on routine administrative leave.
On October 4, 2024, a male suspect entered a bank in Cosner’s Corner and handed the teller a note demanding money. During the attempt, the suspect displayed a knife but left without any cash. Deputies quickly arrived to search for the suspect, who was spotted and apprehended by a fire marshal in the area. The suspect was later charged with entering a bank armed with the intent to commit larceny.

On October 04, 2024 at 1pm, a male suspect entered the Atlantic Union Bank in the 10100 block of Patriot Hwy in Cosner[‘s] Corner and provided the bank teller a note demanding money. The suspect displayed a knife during the robbery attempt, but left on foot without obtaining any money. Deputies quickly arrived and scoured the area looking for the suspect. Just south of the bank, Fire Marshall J. Strang who was in the area spotted the suspect and assisted deputies with taking him into custody.
Detectives arrested and charged the suspect who was identified as Xavier Roberts, 43 years of age from Spotsylvania with entering a bank armed with the intent to commit larceny. He was incarcerated in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Original post — A man arrested for reckless driving during a National Night Out event on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, has escaped custody at Stafford Hospital and is currently on the run. Stafford County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for 22-year-old Robert Ouzts, who slipped away from jail custody earlier today, Thursday, October 3, 2024.
Ouzts was last seen wearing blue pants and no shirt near a pond beside Stafford Hospital. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and call 911 if they have any information on his whereabouts. Deputies are using K-9 units to search for Ouzts, who is considered dangerous.
Ouzts was initially arrested just before starting a National Night Out event at Stafford Market Place. At about 3:47 p.m. on October 1, the Traffic Safety Unit deputies observed a motorcyclist, later identified as Ouzts, driving recklessly through the crowded parking lot. He was without a license plate or helmet and nearly struck several pedestrians. When deputies J.A. Alford and S.C. Martin attempted to stop him near Staffordboro Boulevard, Ouzts tried to flee and even assaulted one of the deputies before abandoning his motorcycle and running away.
In his attempt to escape, Ouzts lost his shoes and fled barefoot through the parking lot, police said. His flight was short-lived as deputies pursued him toward Little Caesars Pizza, where one deputy deployed a taser, successfully apprehending him.
At the scene, Ouzts was checked by Fire and Rescue and taken into custody. He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. He faced multiple charges, including assault on law enforcement, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and several other motor vehicle offenses.
Updated 4 p.m. —Â A former Spotsylvania County school bus aid is charged with sexually abusing a child on a school bus, police said. The former employee’s August 5, 2024, and the termination date was September 26, 2024, said Spotsylvania County Public Schools spokeswoman Renee Daniels.
Authorities said the man lives in Fredericksburg.

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office “Child Victim Unit” arrested Miguel Velasquez Velasco (22) of Fredericksburg on the evening of September 26, 2024.
Detectives were notified by school authorities after suspicion of inappropriate touching of a student had occurred on a school bus. Detectives with the “Child Victim Unit” and school administration immediately started an investigation and obtained substantial evidence that Mr. Velasquez Velasco assaulted three separate children on the school bus on the day of September 26th.
The victims ages range from 4 to 5 years of age who are students with disabilities. Miguel was arrested and charged with (8) counts of aggravated sexual battery of a child, (2) counts of indecent liberties of a child while in a custodial role, and (1) count of attempted sodomy of a child. He was incarcerated in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under NO bond.
Mr. Velasquez Velasco’s immigration status is that of a current lawful permanent resident and has no known criminal record. This case is still under investigation by Detectives. No further information will be released at this time.

Spotsylvania County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a shooting that occurred at 9:50 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at a home on W Glen Dower Drive, about three miles from Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.
They found an adult male with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a second victim inside the home with a gunshot wound to an extremity. Detectives believe the estranged adult son arrived at the home and shot his father through the front door. Both were transported to a trauma center, with the son in critical condition and the father in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.

Deputies responded to a reported shooting yesterday evening around 9:50pm in the 3700 block of W Glen Dower Drive. Deputies arrived to find an adult male lying in the driveway with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A second adult victim was found in the home with a gunshot wound to an extremity. Detectives learned that an estranged adult son showed up to the house and shot the father through the front door. Both were transported to an area trauma center with the son in critical condition and the father in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
