Prince William County has several boards, commissions and committees that work to inform the Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) decisions by studying issues, plans and policies.

There are several vacancies in the county, and here’s a comprehensive list of the immediate openings with the roles and responsibilities. For information on expired or ending terms, please visit the boards, commissions and committees website.

Prince William County Police Department reopened its field office at Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge earlier this month.

The field office will be utilized to support the mall, its visitors and tenants, but will also house members of the department's recruitment team. According to a press release, the office will be available for new hire testing, report writing, meetings, training seminars and processing people who commit minor offenses. The location within the mall is behind the Round Bowling & Amusement.

The Prince William County Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for its Universal Human Rights Day Awards, which honor individuals, organizations, and groups that have significantly contributed to advancing human rights and equality in the community.
The Prince William County Human Rights Commission is once again accepting nominations for its Universal Human Rights Day Awards. These awards recognize people in the community who have made significant contributions in fostering equality and advancing human rights for all people in Prince William County. All submissions are due by Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024. Past awardees have been recognized for their work in combating sex trafficking, addressing homelessness and alleviating food insecurity. Others earned the award through activities such as mentoring Prince William County youth, providing health education and workshops tutoring, supporting college and career planning, and promoting informed decision-making. Past awardees have also demonstrated leadership, excellence, effectiveness and courage that advanced equality. Community members are encouraged to submit nominations for individuals, schools, community groups, organizations or businesses. Award nominees must be Prince William County residents. To submit a nomination, visit pwcva.gov/human-rights-awards and complete the form by Dec. 14, 2024. Nominations can also be mailed or delivered to the Human Rights Office at 15941Donald Curtis Drive, Suite 125, Woodbridge, VA 22191. The awardees will be honored on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025, at the McCoart Government Center, during the annual Universal Human Rights Day celebration. This year’s event will also commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act. The Prince William County Human Rights Commission remains dedicated to its mission of eliminating discrimination and enforcing civil and human rights laws to establish equal opportunity for all people. Through education and advocacy, the commission seeks to cultivate a community where every resident is treated with fairness and dignity. Commission Chair Curtis Porter said it is important to recognize people for their contributions. “We want to recognize people who are making a contribution in the field of human and civil rights in Prince William County. This is an excellent opportunity for the Prince William County Human Rights Commission to do that,” Porter said.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is evaluating the performance of ParkZen, a new smart parking mobile app that enables local travelers to view real-time parking availability in six commuter lots in Fairfax, Prince William, and Stafford counties at no cost. The ParkZen app helps commuters check for and navigate to unoccupied parking spaces.

Around 100 Unity Reed High School (URHS) students attended a skilled trades expo sponsored by Prince William County's Department of Facilities and Fleet Management (FFM) earlier this month.

Held at the school driver's education range, the event was meant to "inspire students to consider careers in public service and skilled trades," a county press release stated.

FFM showcased various vehicles in the fleet and its maintenance equipment. The Prince William County Police Department also brought some emergency vehicles to show URHS students how to manage and maintain the vehicle during an emergency.

Prince William County will celebrate two major transportation milestones this week with ribbon-cutting events for the new Opitz Boulevard ramp on the 95 Express Lanes and the county's first-ever commuter parking garage, the Neabsco-Potomac Commuter Garage. Together, these projects aim to improve transit access, ease congestion, and expand multi-modal options in a rapidly growing area.

Opitz Boulevard Ramp Ribbon Cutting

On Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 11 a.m. to noon, local leaders will officially open the Opitz Boulevard ramp on the 95 Express Lanes. This $70 million project, funded by Transurban and executed in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Shirley Contracting Company, provides a dedicated northbound access point for morning commuters, connecting directly to a busy area that includes Sentara Medical Center, Potomac Mills, and the new Neabsco-Potomac Commuter Garage. This new entry to the Express Lanes is the first stand-alone ramp integrated into the 95/395 Express Lanes network, and it is expected to relieve congestion for drivers heading northbound during peak hours.

At the Occoquan Town Council’s November 6 meeting, members revisited the Riverwalk Project, a long-anticipated expansion to connect more of the town’s waterfront to its main pedestrian pathways.

This discussion followed up on plans from the September 20, 2022 meeting, when the council authorized the Berkley Group to develop a comprehensive project vision covering the Riverwalk and Riverwalk Overlook expansions. This plan, funded through the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF), involved a survey of local conditions, community feedback sessions, and preliminary diagrams, ultimately completed in September 2023.

On November 7, an investigation was initiated into an assault at Freedom High School involving a school security officer who allegedly pinched an 18-year-old female student's cheek during an inappropriate conversation on October 8. The officer, 41, was charged with assault and battery and served with a summons on November 8. Press Release from Prince William Police:
Assault & Battery – On November 7, the School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to Freedom High School located at 15201 Neabsco Mills Rd in Woodbridge (22191) began an investigation into an assault by a school staff member against a student that reportedly occurred on October 8. The investigation revealed the victim, an 18-year-old female student, was on a bus in the parking lot of the school when she encountered a school security officer, identified as the accused. During the encounter, the accused pinched the victim’s cheek while he engaged in an inappropriate conversation. No injuries were reported. The incident recently came to the attention of school officials who notified the police. Following the investigation, the SRO obtained a summons for the accused, identified as Pedro S. CHIRINO who was served on November 8.

Prince William County's Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) is now conducting its Housing and Community Needs Survey to gather resident perspectives on these needs.

Because the county, the City of Manassas and Manassas Park receive $3 million in federal funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the county is administering this survey to best determine where the highest needs are in the community.
