Fredericksburg Police are investigating a pedestrian accident on November 18, 2024, where a 50-year-old man was struck by a vehicle on Fall Hill Avenue and critically injured. The driver remained at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

Fredericksburg Police are currently investigating a pedestrian accident that took place on the evening of November 18, 2024, at approximately 5:31 p.m.

The victim, Cesareo Jurado Coca, a 50-year-old man, of Fredericksburg, was crossing the travel lanes when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound in the 3300 block of Fall Hill Avenue. He sustained critical injuries and was transported to the nearest hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care. His family has been notified.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the preliminary investigation. There were no indicators of impairment, and the driver did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

The police department’s traffic reconstruction team is conducting an investigation. As more information becomes available, we will provide further updates.

Fredericksburg Police are investigating a pedestrian accident that occurred on Plank Road on November 16, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old man. The driver of the truck involved remained at the scene, and no signs of impairment were found.

Fredericksburg Police are currently investigating a pedestrian accident that took place early [yesterday] morning at 6:20 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of Plank Road.

The victim, Joe Anthony Palacios, a 26-year-old man with no permanent address, was walking eastbound in the travel lane of the 2800 block of Plank Road when he was struck by a truck. He sustained severe injuries and was transported to the nearest hospital for emergency care. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at 10:43 a.m. [yesterday] morning.

The driver remained at the scene of the incident and cooperated during the preliminary investigation. There were no indicators of impairment and the driver did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

The medical examiner’s office has begun its investigation. The police department’s traffic reconstruction team is also investigating. Further updates will be released at a later date.

The next of kin has been notified, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.

On November 6, the driver of a 2021 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van was charged with careless driving following a fatal crash on November 4 near Manassas, which killed a 90-year-old pedestrian. The investigation determined that distracted driving contributed to the collision, and the driver was issued a court summons for the traffic violation.

The investigation revealed the driver of a 2021 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van was traveling eastbound on Lake Jackson Dr. when the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking on the shoulder portion of the roadway. At the location of the crash, no sidewalk is present. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where he died later that evening from injuries sustained during the crash. The driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene and was not injured. Investigators determined that speed was not a factor in the crash. Crash investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact police. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Fredericksburg is introducing school zone speed enforcement cameras in two school zones in late 2024 to improve road safety for students. Before citations are issued, a 30-day warning period will begin, and additional details are available on the city's website.

Halloween (Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024) may be a fun holiday for kids but for parents trick-or-treat time can be a little tricky. Concerns about children’s safety – whether they are out in the neighborhood, gathering candy at a mall or shopping center, or back home with bags of treats – can darken the day more quickly than a black cat.

To make Halloween a treat for all, follow these safety tips:

• Make sure kids, and the adults accompanying them, wear light colors, carry a flashlight or put reflective tape on their costumes. October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and this helps drivers see everyone.
• Trick-or-treaters should always be in groups, so they are not a tempting target for real-life goblins. Parents or a trusted adult should accompany young children.
• Make sure kids know not to enter strange houses or strangers’ cars. Children should stop only at familiar homes where the outside lights are on.
• Kids need to know not to eat their treats until they get home. One way to keep trick-or-treaters from digging in while they are still out is to feed them a meal or a snack beforehand.
• Check all treats at home in a well-lighted place.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Prince William County Police Department joins the Department of Motor Vehicles and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in reminding pedestrians and drivers to respect each other to stay safe on the roads.

Drivers must stop – not just yield – for pedestrians in all crosswalks in Virginia in any marked or unmarked intersection where the speed limit is 35 mph or less. They could face a fine of between $100 and $500 if they fail to do so. Drivers can proceed once the pedestrian has passed the lane in which the vehicle is stopped.

Pedestrians must do their parts as well. While it might be convenient to cross a roadway wherever they happen to be, those on foot should use marked crosswalks for increased safety. Following are some tips to be safe if you are walking by yourself or with others:

• Cross the street at the corner and use marked crosswalks when they are available. That’s where drivers are expecting to see you.
• Wait for the walk signal to cross the street.
• Watch for turning vehicles.
• Before crossing look left, right, and left again.
• Watch out for blind spots around trucks and buses.
• Avoid using your cell phone while you are crossing the street.
• On an off-street trail, obey all posted signage and approach intersections with caution.
