Future of bus and rail: A new study recommends no VRE to Haymarket, and bus-rapid transit, and Metro to Woodbridge. Prince William County Supervisors Kenny Boddye and Victor Angry invite community members to join them for a virtual town hall on the Future of Transit, Nov. 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. to discuss what these results could mean.

18 and younger eat free: Stafford County Public Schools will be serving after-school snacks at no charge to children 18 and under through the At-Risk Afterschool Meals Program.

Good morning, everyone. Election season in Virginia is over, for now. There were 700,000 more votes cast for Virginia Governor in 2021 than in 2017.

Correction: Yesterday, we incorrectly reported Paul Milde won the Aquia District Supervisors race when, in fact, voters chose Monica Gary. I apologize for the error.

Food drive: A food donation drive aimed at securing more than 100,000 pounds of food by the end of the month kicks off at the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington.

Road refresh: Road crews today will begin resurfacing work to improve the ride and freshen pavement markings on Austin Ridge Drive in Stafford County.

Eat your leftovers: Thanks to a unique collaboration with USDA’s Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production, food leftovers from six Prince William County schools are now being sorted, bagged and collected before being mixed with organic yard waste and processed into compost at the county’s recycling center.

Rumberger runs events: The Workhouse Arts Center hired Scott Rumberger as the Special Events & Rentals Director. He will begin his new role on November 16, 2021.

Vets Day recognition: Veterans will be recognized in Prince William County on Wednesday, November 10, during a special 9:30 a.m. ceremony at the county government center.

Outdoor seating: On Wednesday, benches and work tables were built and installed along trails in a semi-wooded/open space area behind Piney Branch Elementary School in Bristow. This creates opportunities for environmental investigations.

Fxbg redistricting: A series of meetings on political redistricting will be held this month in Fredericksburg. Redistricting is the process of redrawing the boundaries of voting districts based on population changes. It occurs every 10 years following the United States Census and is governed by state law.

Good morning, everyone. How is that candy hangover hitting this morning? It was a busy weekend for politics in our area over the weekend. However, I’m happy to say my family and I had a wonderful Halloween, complete with trunk and trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. I hope you had a great weekend.

Sour mood?: New NBC News polling shows 7 in 10 Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Will the sour mood hurt Virginia Democrats on Tuesday? A look at the final push for votes.

Tanyard Hill: Work to repave Tanyard Hill Road/Union Street in Occoquan, as road crews rescheduled nighttime closures for this week.

New national tree: Ahead of the holiday season, the National Park Service (NPS) planted a new National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse in President’s Park today. The new tree, a 27-foot white fir (Abies Concolor) from Middleburg, Pa. was donated by Hill View Christmas Tree Farm, and will be the first white fir to serve as the National Christmas Tree.

Travel hot spots: Check this page and see the locations of all the planned road work in Stafford County and Fredericksburg this week.

Disability inclusion: This past week marked the end of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual awareness campaign held each October to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities to the workforce. NDEAM activities don’t have to end in October, however. Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to advance disability inclusion throughout the year.

NSHS honored: North Stafford High School (NSHS) has earned national recognition as a 2020-2021 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for providing broad access to transformative learning experiences for students through its PLTW Biomedical Science and Engineering programs. The school is one of only 204 high schools nationwide to receive this honor.

ICYMI: On Friday, we learned the site used to host Vice-President Kamala Harris’ rally for Terry McAuliffe for Governor was purchased with coronavirus bailout funds 1 month before Dumfries Town Council accepted the cash. On top of that, officials have yet to tell residents how they plan to use the 40-year-old building.

Good Saturday, everyone. Thanks for starting your day smarter with us here at Potomac Local News. Here’s what’s happening in our communities today.

Rising waters: While rain and high winds have subsided, travelers are urged to proceed with caution on Saturday in coastal and low-lying areas, where flooding remains a risk, especially at high tide.

Early voting ends: Today is the last day to vote early in person for the November 2 General Election. Find your early polling place here. If you miss early in-person voting, the polls will be open on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Well done: After 15 years in business, the All American Steakhouse in Lake Ridge is calling it quits. The restaurant chain blames failed lease negotiations for the move and invited partons to visit its nearby location at Route 234 and Spriggs Road.

Teachers union: Virginia Education Association and elected officials will gather at 9 a.m. at the Stafford County Courthouse, at 1300 Courthouse Road, to support of House of Delegates incumbent Josh Cole (D) and school board candidate Maya Guy.

Closing for the season: The Workhouse Community Market will close down after today, Saturday, October 30. Today’s market will feature Halloween fun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., trick-or-treating at the market vendors.

Metro delays continue: Metro’s trains will continue to run on their current reduced schedule at least through November 15. As a result, OmniRide passengers who transfer to Metrorail may experience commute delays, OmniRide told its riders on Friday.

Happy Friday, everyone. One more day until the weekend. Thanks for starting your day smarter with us here at Potomac Local News. Here’s what’s happening in our communities today.

Flood warning: We’re under a coastal flood warning until 8 a.m. Saturday, as a strong storm will bring flooding not seen since Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Prince William outlines the areas affected in that county. Stafford is under the same warning, too.

Barnstorming: Political candidates Glenn Youngin (R) and Terry McAuliffe (D) are crisscrossing the state during the campaign’s final days. Lt. Gov. candidate Hala Ayala (D) was in Woodbridge last night, and Youngkin is scheduled to be in Fredericksburg and Manassas Park tomorrow. Early voting ends Saturday. Election Day is Tuesday, November 2.

Mass exodus: Prince William County has lost several top planning officials in quick succession as the county is tackling potentially sweeping land-use issues.

Progressive challenge: In one of Prince William County’s most competitive races for a local House of Delegates’ seat, a moderate Republican who says he supports COVID-19 vaccine requirements for public sector workers and K-12 students is challenging one of the commonwealth’s most progressive lawmakers.

Manassas vets parade: After taking a year off, the Northern Virginia Veterans Parade returns to Manassas on Saturday, November 6, at 11 a.m. The parade will begin at Prescott Avenue and Quarry Road and proceed to Center Street to the Harris Pavillion. All veterans are invited to march.

Head of the class: Jennifer Taylor, President, and CEO of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), has been awarded George Mason University’s School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award. Due to Jennifer’s commitment to strengthening the technology industry’s workforce and closing the region’s skill gap, GMU has honored her with this recognition.

Native tongue: Stafford County Public Schools is increasing its commitment to global diversity and reaching its families in their native languages by hiring 10 international teachers, recognizing 30 staff members with the global seal of biliteracy, and launching Spanish versions of its division-wide social media sites.

Top librarian: The Virginia Council on Economic Education (VCEE) has selected Schenell Agee, supervisor of Library Media Programs and Research for Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS), as the 2021 Virginia Outstanding Economic Educator of the Year.

Community health: Erik Shannon has been named Interim Chief Executive Officer of UVA Community Health. UVA Community Health includes an integrated network of outpatient services across Culpeper and Northern Virginia, with UVA Culpeper Medical Center, UVA Haymarket Medical Center, and UVA Prince William Medical Center.

QUBE: The Quantico Corporate Center is expanding and will be home to leading defense & technology companies, the US government, and top academic programs in business, forensics, and cyber-related degrees.
