Sentara sponsors Play4Kay Pink Game
Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC) is set to sponsor the George Mason University women's basketball Play4Kay Pink Game for the fifth consecutive year. The event, part of the #Play4Kay initiative by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, aims to combat cancers affecting women. The GMU women's basketball team will face Saint Joseph's University at EagleBank Arena on Thursday, February 8, with tip-off at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by Sentara, the game includes activities to raise awareness and celebrate female cancer survivors.

George Mason University is implementing enhanced security measures to prioritize the safety and security of all attendees at the upcoming Spring Commencement and individual college and school degree celebrations.
Security checkpoints will be set up at the entrances to EagleBank Arena's Spring Commencement and the various degree celebrations at EagleBank Arena and the Concert Hall, on the Fairfax Campus. All graduates and guests must pass through these checkpoints, where thorough security procedures will be conducted.

Virginia Railway Express: "The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) fiscal year (FY) 2025 budget received final approval Thursday evening, as the second of its two parent commissions voted to adopt the budget and accompanying six-year capital improvement program (CIP)."
"VRE’s FY 2025 operating budget totals $119.9 million, which includes operations, maintenance, and existing debt service. This is an increase of $11.0 million or 10 percent over the FY 2024 operating budget. The budget includes increases to fares of 5 percent and jurisdictional contributions of 14 percent. Both take effect July 1. VRE’s last broad-based fare increase was 3 percent in FY 2020."

“Officials say the fire is located in the area of 9900 blk of Richmond Hwy in the Lorton area. Crews arrived to find a scrap pile on fire. Crews continue to work to extinguish the fire. No reported civilian or firefighter injuries at this time,” reports WTTG-TV.
Fairfax Connection: “Two juvenile suspects have turned themselves in for their involvement in the Franconia shooting that left a Woodbridge man dead.”
“On Wednesday, Dec. 20, Fairfax County Police officers were notified of two juvenile suspects who turned themselves in to Arlington Police. Both juveniles were transported to Fairfax County and charged. One juvenile is charged with Second Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. The second juvenile is charged with Principal in the Second Degree. Both juveniles are currently being held at the Juvenile Detention Center.”
Virginia Railway Express officials say the public wants Saturday service and is willing to pay for it.
During the VRE Operations Board meeting on Friday, November 17, 2023, in Woodbridge, the state’s only commuter railway, presented the results of an internal survey showing 94 percent of respondents favor Saturday service and a majority are willing to pay higher fares to get it.
VRE CFO Mark Schofield said that implementing Saturday service would lead to an additional $1 million in operating costs in FY2025. However, the railway’s overall operating costs are expected to decrease by $1.4 million due to other reductions.
