Occoquan’s annual haunted maze will spook and thrill visitors again on Saturday, October 26, from 5 to 10 p.m., with net profits benefiting Patriots for Disabled Divers (PFDD).

This unique event, located in the parking lot behind D’Rocco’s on Mill Street, invites volunteers and attendees alike to support a great cause while enjoying a night of Halloween fun. PFDD is a nonprofit that uses scuba therapy to help wounded warriors, and this year’s maze holds special significance, honoring the late Bill Pressly, the maze’s original designer.

In an interview with Merial Currer, founder of PFDD, we learned more about the history of the maze, Bill’s legacy, and what’s in store for this year’s event.

Q: How did Patriots for Disabled Divers become the beneficiary of the maze, and how long has this partnership been in place?

A: We are the originators of the idea, and while we still had our store, we partnered with the town on it. The maze was created by my brother, Bill Pressly, who worked in theater tech for over 40 years. He used to build haunted mazes for his children’s high school as fundraisers for the theater department, but he shifted his focus to PFDD after they graduated. Our first maze was in 2019. We didn’t have one in 2020, so this will be our fifth year.

Q: Could you share more about Bill’s involvement over the years? Are there any unique plans to honor his memory during this year’s event?

A: Bill was deeply involved in many aspects of PFDD and Patriot Scuba. He loved Halloween, so we really want this to be an extra special event. Before he passed away, Bill provided us with this year’s maze design. Wolfpack Homes and Investments, along with Jason Remodeling, INC, have graciously stepped up to build the maze using Bill’s plans. They’re donating their time and labor to bring his intricate design to life, putting together over 100 sheets of 4’x8′ OSB.

Q: What new or unique elements can visitors expect in this year’s maze?

A: I don’t want to give too much away, but we’ll have a DJ, a bar, a dance area, and fire pits. You don’t have to pay to go through the maze to enjoy the party!

Q: Are there specific volunteer roles in high demand?

A: We’re always in need of scarers—people who dress up and haunt the maze. If we have more volunteers than needed, we’ll rotate them to give visitors a different experience each time they go through. With unlimited maze trips included in the ticket purchase, it keeps the experience fresh.

Q: How many volunteers are needed for the event, and what’s your goal this year?

A: It takes about 30 volunteers to run the event smoothly, and we’re aiming for that number again this year.

Q: How have funds raised in past years supported PFDD’s mission?

A: Last year, the maze raised almost $10,000, and I’m hoping to double that this year. The funds go directly to scuba diving training for disabled veterans. Jeff and I donate the materials for the maze, so all ticket sales go toward funding the divers.

Q: What are the key details for those interested in attending?

A: The maze runs from 5 to 10 p.m. in the parking lot behind D’Rocco’s on Mill Street. Adult admission is $10, and children 12 and under get in for $5. We rate it PG-13. A free shuttle will run from 4:30 to 11 p.m., picking up attendees from the lot at 123 and Old Bridge and dropping them off at the maze.

The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) has announced a new partnership with Altruix Pharmacy to improve access to medication for individuals with behavioral health concerns and developmental disabilities. The collaboration aims to overcome barriers that prevent individuals from taking their prescribed medications, such as transportation, time, and cost.

Joe Wickens, executive director of RACSB, highlighted the importance of this partnership: “The individuals we serve have unique needs. Altruix focuses on behavioral healthcare and developmental disability services, giving them valuable expertise. The pharmacy team will provide tailored care to the people we serve and offer a valuable resource to our employees.”

Meeting the Community’s Needs

This partnership is part of RACSB’s larger goal to integrate whole-person health care for the community. Altruix will operate a hybrid pharmacy model at RACSB’s Fredericksburg Clinic, offering on-site services supported by a distribution hub. This setup allows the pharmacy to provide medication packaging and monthly cycle fills, improving both quality control and patient convenience.

“We’re excited to be part of this meaningful step forward,” said Greg Ganse, CEO of Altruix Pharmacy. “By partnering with RACSB, we can bring our expertise in behavioral health and developmental disabilities directly to the people who need it most.”

Brandie Williams, RACSB’s executive director of community support, emphasized the critical need for the partnership, citing alarming statistics that show men and women with mental disorders have life expectancies that are 10 and 7 years shorter, respectively, than those without. “By providing comprehensive care management and leveraging Altruix’s patented Medherent technology, we aim to improve medication adherence, a key factor in supporting better health outcomes,” said Williams.

Overcoming Barriers to Medication Access

For many residents, accessing medication can be a challenge due to financial constraints, time, and transportation issues. Altruix’s on-site presence at the Fredericksburg Clinic and its delivery service will help mitigate these barriers. The pharmacy is located on a public transportation route and can coordinate with patients’ appointments. For those unable to visit the clinic, medications can be delivered directly to their homes.

Additionally, Altruix’s financial assistance program works closely with individuals and RACSB staff to reduce the cost of medications, ensuring affordability for all.

Pharmacy Grand Opening on October 22

The partnership will be celebrated with a grand opening event on October 22 at 3:00 p.m. at RACSB’s Fredericksburg Clinic. The event will highlight the positive impact the collaboration is expected to have on the community, including improved access to medications and specialized care for behavioral health and developmental disability patients.

Water’s End Brewery in Lake Ridge is set to host a special screening of “Written by Mike,” a film shot in the heart of Virginia that captures the essence of Fredericksburg and its surrounding locales. The screening is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, at 8:30 p.m. at the brewery’s Dillingham Square location in Lake Ridge.

Directed by Richmond-based filmmaker Ryan Cudahy, the film paints an intimate portrait of two couples navigating the tumultuous waters of family trauma and personal illness. “Written by Mike” is more than a narrative; it’s a therapeutic journey through the eyes of its creator. “I wrote this film as a way to deal with my own experiences with mental health and family,” Cudahy explains. “It was a healing process that took over five years to refine.”

Fredericksburg, with its quaint charm and vibrant business community, was chosen as the primary filming location, offering a picturesque backdrop that significantly contributes to the film’s narrative depth. “I wanted to showcase the small-town feel of Fredericksburg while highlighting its beautiful downtown and supportive local businesses,” said Cudahy. The film features several local establishments, including the Red Dragon Brewery and the Curitiba Art CafĂ©, enhancing its authentic Virginia flavor.

The film has already made rounds in the Virginia film circuit, receiving accolades for its heartfelt portrayal and stunning visual representation of Virginia’s landscapes. According to Cudahy, the support from local businesses and the Virginia Film Office was pivotal in bringing his vision to life.

A $5 donation is suggested for the screening, with a portion of the proceeds going to Region 10, a mental health wellness center, underscoring the film’s commitment to mental health awareness. “It’s important for us to not only tell a compelling story but also to make a positive impact,” Cudahy added.

“Written by Mike” represents a significant achievement for Cudahy, who also serves as the programming director for the Fredericksburg Film Festival. Looking ahead, he is focused on enriching the local film scene and promoting Virginia as a prime destination for filmmakers.

For those unable to attend the premiere, “Written by Mike” will be available for streaming on November 15 through Green Apple Entertainment, with additional platforms to be announced later. This local screening provides a unique opportunity for community members to support regional cinema and enjoy a story deeply rooted in Virginia’s landscapes.
