Search and Rescue Launched for Man Stuck in Marsh

By KJ Mushung

Stafford, Va. — A LifeEvac helicopter and various water rescue boats were dispatched from Aquia Harbour, Willow Landing and Widewater in search of a man who was stuck in the marsh but didn’t know his exact location.

A call to 911 came in from a mobile phone around 8 a.m. on Saturday from a man who had gone for a walk around 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. from Aquia Harbour, according to Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Mark Doyle. The man reportedly walked along the water line and ended up stuck in the marsh. When he called, he was unsure of his location but thought he was still in Aquia Harbour and reported that he could see a marina.

The man was spotted in the vicinity of Willow Landing by the people in the LifeEvac helicopter around 9 a.m., and a water rescue craft headed to his location. He was very cold when found and sent to the hospital, according to Doyle.

A U.S. Park Police helicopter was also en route to the scene when the man was found.

The man’s identity was not released.

Doyle said he was unaware of whether alcohol or other substances contributed to the man’s situation and did not know why the man went for a walk in the middle of the night.
