Snowstorm preps

A significant winter storm is set to bring 4-12 inches of snow and icy conditions to our region starting Sunday night and continuing through Monday. Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a State of Emergency, mobilizing state resources to prepare for hazardous travel and frigid temperatures.

We’ve got an exclusive interview with VDOT Fredericksburg on how it’s preparing for the storm.

Key Details:

  • Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected to disrupt Monday’s commute.
  • VDOT crews are fully mobilized with 900+ equipment to treat and clear roads.
  • Residents are urged to complete travel by Sunday afternoon and stay off roads during the storm.

Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the week, prolonging icy conditions. For updates and safety tips, stay with us.

Calling it quits

Stafford County Supervisor Monica Gary, representing the Aquia District, announced she will not seek re-election when her term ends on December 31, 2025. In a statement posted on Facebook, Gary emphasized her desire to prioritize family and faith, stating, “This is also a time for me to deepen my relationship with the Lord and prepare for whatever comes next.”

Gary’s announcement follows recent controversies, including her censure by the Board of Supervisors on December 17, 2024, for her role in removing a library board member.

Whoa, baby

Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals celebrated the arrival of their first New Year’s babies of 2025. Kylah Ann, born at 1:55 a.m., is the first baby at Mary Washington Hospital, while Miles Roy, born at 4:59 a.m., is Stafford Hospital’s first baby of the year. Both families are overjoyed, and the newborns are healthy and thriving.

In Manassas, the first baby of 2025, Colson James Cormack, was born at 2:43 a.m. on New Year’s Day at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center. Weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces and measuring 20 inches, Colson brings joy to proud mother Miranda Cormack and her family in Warrenton. Delivered by Dr. Victor R. Khayat and assisted by an exceptional care team, Miranda shared her gratitude for the amazing staff who made the moment unforgettable.

Open seat

Fredericksburg City Council seeks applicants to fill the Ward 3 seat following Dr. Tim Duffy’s resignation after 10 years of service. Ward 3 residents interested in serving for the remainder of the term, ending December 31, 2025, should submit a Boards & Commissions Appointment Application and email a resume to [email protected] by January 15, 2025. The Council will discuss the appointment further during its January 14, 2025, meeting and must select a replacement within 45 days of January 1, per the City Charter.

Dr. Duffy announced his resignation during the December 10, 2024, council meeting, citing personal and family health challenges, including his ongoing battle with prostate cancer. His resignation took effect on January 1, 2025, after a decade of service to the Ward 3 community.

Road work ahead

VDOT is set to conduct road work in the Fredericksburg District from January 5–11, 2025, with weather-dependent schedules. Key projects include:

  • I-95 Rappahannock River Crossing (Northbound): Single lane closures between mile markers 134–136 for guardrail installation (Monday–Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.).
  • 95 Express Lanes Extension (Southbound): Lane closures near Exit 136 for construction work (Wednesday–Thursday, 9 p.m.–5 a.m.).

Drivers are advised to plan for potential delays and check VDOT’s updates online.

Publisher Post Nov 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to you, our loyal members. Your support empowers us to continue telling the stories that matter most to our communities. Our mission to provide trustworthy, impactful journalism wouldn’t be possible without you.

I also want to take a moment to thank our dedicated contributing editors and reporters. Their tireless work ensures we cover the stories that shape our neighborhoods and impact our daily lives. Some of their incredible efforts are highlighted in our list of 2024’s most-read stories.

To my surprise, every single one of this year’s most-read stories comes from Stafford County. This signals something exciting: Stafford County is a fast-growing area and a community eager for reliable news and information. In response, we will continue to focus on Stafford County while maintaining strong coverage across Prince William County and the cities of Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Manassas Park.

The 2024 election underscored a critical truth—people are turning to trusted sources for news across multiple platforms. With that in mind, we’re excited to expand our video podcast, or “Vodcast,” and bring more social media content, including our new TikTok platform, which I’m launching. Stay tuned for updates as we bring you fresh ways to engage with the stories that matter most to you.

Looking ahead, 2025 marks an incredible milestone: our 15th year of publishing. We’re thrilled about what tomorrow will bring and are honored to have you on this journey.

Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to another year of impactful journalism.

Happy New Year,

  • Two men in a box truck attempted to breach the main gate of Quantico Marine Corps Base on May 3, 2024. Claiming to be Amazon contractors, they lacked proper credentials, prompting military police to direct them to a holding area. Ignoring instructions, the driver advanced, triggering roadblocks that stopped the vehicle. The men, one reportedly on the U.S. terrorist watch list, were detained and later turned over to ICE. The incident heightened security on the base and mirrored similar unauthorized breaches at military installations and the White House, raising concerns about national security protocols. Former Stafford Economic Development Director Kyle Alwine resigned amid opposition from elected officials, including Laura Sellers, a member of the Planning Commission. The Stafford location would be Virginia’s third Buc-ee’s, joining sites planned for New Kent and Harrisonburg, solidifying the brand’s presence on all three major interstate highways in the state.

The plaintiff’s child was attacked twice in 2023, with one incident recorded and shared online. Following the assaults, the child withdrew from North Stafford High School. • Date Published: January 29, 2024
    • The Best Buy store at Stafford Market Place closed on March 2, 2024, after 16 years of operation. Its closure reflects the growing impact of online shopping on traditional retail. Originally a milestone for Stafford residents seeking local shopping options, the store’s departure leaves a gap in the community. A Planet Fitness gym replaced the location in December 2024. Meanwhile, residents await projects like The Garrison, a long-delayed development that promised retail, dining, and entertainment spaces but has yet to materialize.

In a significant development for the local retail scene, the Best Buy store at 1455 Stafford Market Place in North Stafford will close its doors on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
