Demolition ranges may hinder growth

Stafford County, Va. –– The man in charge at Quantico is not pleased about a plan to develop Boswell’s Corner into an urban business district.

The developing plot of land sits where U.S. 1 meets Telegraph Road, just south of the Prince William County line, and “is poised for explosive growth,” according to a draft of the Stafford County Comprehensive Plan.

The BRAC consolidation is expected to bring more than 500 military jobs here by September, 2011.

The Quantico Corporate Center – an expanding office complex that includes the Globe and Laurel restaurant, a longtime staple of the Quantico area – now sits at Boswell’s Corner.

But base commander Col. Daniel J. Choike says the nearby Charlie Demo munitions range on base is reason enough to stop Boswell’s Corner from developing further.

“You have to realize that not only do we fire ammunitions and blow things up with our demolitions, but that we’re not the only customer…we’re not the only individual that does that,” said Choike. “There are law enforcement agencies, as well as the FBI, that play a big part in that.”

According to map provided by Choike, any place within a five-mile radius of the demo range can and will have their windows rattled by exploding munitions.

Boswell’s Corner sits about two miles from the demolition range.

Base officials often send out warnings telling residents to be prepared for loud noises on demolition training days.

When Choike was asked by Supervisor Cord A. Sterling, R-Rockhill, if moving the planned urban development area from Boswell’s Corner to the North Stafford area on Va. 610 would be more amiable, the commander replied more study needs to be done, as there are other demolition ranges on the base to contend with.

Boswell’s Corner is one of five areas in Stafford County that is eyed for expected urban growth.

The four other sites include the county courthouse area, Falmouth, Southern Gateway and the county’s Widewater Peninsula.
