The man charged in Monday’s fatal crash in Lorton is in the country illegally.
Carlos Lagos Ramos is charged in the death of a Fairfax Station man after police say he lost control of his car Monday night.
Ramos has already once been deported from the U.S.
“Carlos Lagos Ramos, a Honduran national entered the United States without inspection in September 2003. He was ordered deported by an immigration judge in November 2003 and removed to Honduras on January 2004. Ramos later re-entered the U.S. illegally without ICE’s knowledge,” said Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Cori Bassett.
Ramos is charged in Fairfax County with DUI, involuntary manslaughter and with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after he fled the scene of the crash with a 3-year-old child in his arms.
The child was a passenger inside the car at the time of the crash.
“ICE has placed a detainer on Ramos, which means once he’s served out his sentence here in Fairfax County that agency will be able to question him,” said Fairfax Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Sonny Cachuela.
Ramos is scheduled to appear in Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on April 19 on the child delinquency charge, and in General District Court on the remainder of the charges the following day.
Police say Ramos was driving a Honda Civic traveling north on Richmond Highway about 5:22 p.m., lost control of the car, overcorrected and then slammed into a Ford SUV.
That SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Mercedes Benz.
The driver of the SUV, 54-year-old Paul J. Krause, was flown to an area hospital where he later died.
The occupants of the Mercedes were also taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
The child was not injured in the crash, and another passenger inside the Honda who stayed on the scene to speak with police, was taken to an area hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, said police.
This latest case follows that of Carlos Martinelli Montano in Prince William County, who police say was driving while intoxicated last year and struck a car carrying a nun, killing her instantly.
Police say it was his third time driving under the influence, and now Prince William officials have filed a lawsuit against ICE alleging they withheld information about Montano and other illegal immigrants.
