An Air Force veteran was able to honor a fallen Army soldier using skills from his side business – Baret Bats.

Juan Baret, a former Air Force sergeant and current office engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Fort Belvoir, started his business, Baret Bats, from his home in Lake Ridge.

This summer, a group of young adults will be learning a new set of job skills at Prince William Forest Park.

The park is hosting the Hands on Preservation Experience (HOPE) crew to work on a 10-week preservation project at two of their cabin camp sites.

Glea and Larry Kreider want to give back to the community and help employees at the Westminster at Lake Ridge retirement community go to school.

The Kreider’s have established the Kreider Professional Development Endowment Fund as a permanent scholarship fund for full and part time employees at Westminster.

The couple, who are in their early 90s, have lived at Westminster for almost 22 years.

The Greater Prince William (GIMG_1757PW) Little Free Libraries project is continuing to thrive, as more libraries are under construction – managed by our partner Write by the Rails –  and little free libraries in the area are now becoming internationally chartered.

One of the first businesses to get involved with the initiative was HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire, with their car-shaped little free library on Route 1 in Woodbridge.

Yesterday they became internationally chartered by the organization that has popularized the little free libraries movement – Littlefreelibrary.org.

Some Stafford residents may see discolored yellowish water coming from their taps.

According to a Stafford release, the water is safe to drink and will not cause any problems, and there is no need to boil it first. But the county is asking that residents refrain from doing laundry because it could stain clothing.

Stafford County stated that the discoloration is because of a high level of manganese – which happens naturally – at the Lake Mooney Reservoir. The reason for the higher levels of manganese is the recent heavy rains, said Stafford spokeswoman Shannon Howell.

Prince William police officer Jason Van Horn won three running medals this week at the 2015 World Police and Fire Games.

Van Horn, who has been with the department for 13-years, is currently an instructor at the Prince William police academy.

During the running portion of the games this week, Van Horn received a bronze medal for the 5,000 meter track race, a silver medal for the 3,000 meter steeple chase and a gold medal for the half-marathon.

Manassas City school board member Arthur Bushnell was honored for 25 years of service on the board.

The school board voted to nominate Bushnell for the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Regional School Board Member of the Year Award.

According to a release, Bushnell first joined the Manassas school board in 1990. Bushnell is the longest-serving member of the school board in the history of the city, said a release.
