Prince William County businesses are still paying toward the fund for the War of 1812.

The Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) tax was started in the United States for that purpose several centuries ago, and has persisted today in the county.

Who pays the BPOL tax?

The BPOL tax is required of all businesses in the county above a minimum threshold, and varies by industry. The tax is calculated based on a business’ gross (total) receipts.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is applying for a federal grant to get funds for more officers.

The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Justice, and are meant to assist law enforcement agencies with staffing needs.

“We’ve taken advantage of them in the past to supplement and increase our sworn staffing – primarily with the argument that we’re a fast growing community and that we’re not able to keep up with the human resource that is needed to engage in and fulfill our community policing mission,” said Stafford Sheriff Charles Jett.

vdotlogo600pixelsRoute 28 between Bristow Village Boulevard and Battalion Square will be closed in both directions again this weekend.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will continue work on a new storm sewer line.

The installation of the line is part of the $69.9 million widening project being done on Route 28.

A new Sheetz gas station is coming to Woodbridge on 2540 Caton Hill Road.

The Prince William county board approved the application for the Sheetz location at their May 12 meeting.

According to County Planning Office employee Rebecca Horner, the 12,210 square foot site will include fueling stations and food access.

This weekend you can hear bands and drink beer at the Northern Virginia Summer BrewFest in Centreville.

The festival – which is on its 8th year – will be held at the Bull Run Regional Park. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 20 and 21.

Tickets, which cost $25 for those drinking and $10 for designated drivers, and includes admission, a beer tasting glass and six tickets to try different brews, according to a release.

Chuck Feldbush has declared his candidacy for the Stafford sheriff’s race.

All 100 seats for the House of Delegates may be up for grabs again in 2016, no matter what the outcome in this year's November General Election. 

The General Assembly will be called back to Richmond for a special session this summer after a string of court hearings, going all the way to the Supreme Court. A lawsuit asserts that there was racial bias in the drawing of Virginia’s Congressional districts in 2010.

According to court documents, the same percentage-based district drawing guidelines were used in both Congressional and House districts.

The community will be honoring Senator Chuck Colgan’s 40-years of government service – and his 89th birthday – at a tribute gala on September 25.

The gala will be held at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas.

Colgan is the longest serving state senator in Virginia’s history. He was first elected to the state senate in 1975.

Startiimage004ng June 22, a portion of Brentsville Road will be closed for six months.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the road will be closed in order to complete a $2.8 million project to replace the bridge over Broad Run.

Mehrdad Naderi, the area construction engineer, said that the road will be closed off for 100-feet on either side of the bridge area, but that drivers will be able to access other parts of the road.
