From Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bruce Benson:

There has been a lot of talk of late about maker spaces in education, as in dedicating space in our schools to support making things. Wikipedia defines maker culture as “a contemporary culture or subculture representing a technology-based extension of DIY culture that intersects with hacker culture (which is less concerned with physical objects as it focuses on software) and revels in the creation of new devices as well as tinkering with existing ones.” I believe maker culture is much broader than this, extending into virtually every discipline through the lens of creativity. I had the opportunity last week to visit two classrooms that clearly embraced maker culture in two very different ways.

In Ms. Hansen’s Drama 2 class at Colonial Forge High School, we were introduced to basic choreography as a part of a unit on musical theater. Among others, we learned, and practiced, step touch, ball change, three-point turn, Lindy step, paddle turn, high kick, and bell jump (The last of two were particularly difficult for me. And, let me just say, my high kicks were anything but high!). Student groups were then challenged to choreograph (i.e. make) a dance routine for a song incorporating at least fifteen different moves.

STAFFORD, Va. -- A new funding mechanism is in place to save two lakeside dams.

The Stafford County Board of Supervisors voted 7-0 for the Lake Arrowhead Service District. The body will be in charge of overseeing a county-issued loan of at least as $540,000 to repair two dams that hold back waters in two lakes -- Big, and Little Lake Arrowhead -- neglected since 2005 when the community's property owners association disbanded.

Overall, the repair project could cost as much as $700,000. A state grant, and found monies from and old sanitary service district once in place in the neighborhood will be used to fund the difference. The authority will also be charged with maintaining the dams once repaired.

STAFFORD, Va. -- Two dams in Stafford County's Lake Arrowhead neighborhood neglected since 2003 are failing, and Big and Little Arrowhead lakes could be drained leaving a muddy pit if residents choose to do nothing.

Lake Arrowhead residents at a public meeting last fall were split on whether or not to repair the dams or let them fail. Longtime residents said the dams could go and argued they 30 years ago were excluded from participating in activities hosted by the neighborhood's HOA that dissolved in 2003.

If the dams go, so to do the streets that run atop of the dams that connect the neighborhood.
