Myrtle Beach, S.C.–– Paul Demny put together his best start as a Potomac Nationals Monday night in Myrtle Beach. The righthander shut out the Pelicans over seven five-hit innings. Unfortunately for the P-Nats hurler, Robbie Erlin was on the mound for Myrtle Beach, and the southpaw stole the show. Erlin struck out 10 Nationals over his seven innings of work, allowed only two baserunners and retired the last 12 Potomac men who came to bat. Myrtle Beach squeaked out a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, and held on for a three-hit, 2-0 shutout in the series opener.

With one out in the eighth inning, Michael Olt hit a ground ball under the glove of Potomac third baseman Stephen King. Jared Hoying then guided a ball through the right side of the infield to put two men aboard. After Jared Prince popped out for the inning’s second out, Pelicans catcher Zach Zaneski hit a laser into rightfield that broke the scoreless tie and would be all the offense Myrtle needed. A bases loaded walk added a second and final run.

Joseph Ortiz (2-1), who came on in relief of Erlin, retired Potomac in order in the eight and worked around a leadoff Jose Lozada single to earn the victory. Adam Olbrychowski (1-1) pitched the eighth for Potomac and was the hard-luck loser.

Before the drama in the eighth, it was a vintage pitchers duel as Demny and Erlin traded zeroes. Both clubs were sent down in order in the first. Potomac got one of its two hits off Erlin in the second, when J.P. Ramirez lined to center field with two outs. They would not have another baserunner until Jeff Kobernus led off the fourth with a single; after that base hit, Erlin retired the next 12 Potomac hitters – eight of them with strikeouts.

Potomac (6-10) will continue the series with Myrtle Beach (12-5) Tuesday night at 7:05 P.M. Mitchell Clegg takes the ball against Barrett Loux.

Traffic on Dumfries Road near Interstate 95 was stalled after a shooting nearby on Monday night.

Update 1:45 p.m. Tuesday
The man who was shot in Dumfries on Monday night after a drug bust gone bad has been identified.

Police say 38-year-old Henry Pierre Allen, of Landover, Md., was taken to a local hospital after he was shot by an ATF agent Monday night.

Allen is expected to make a full recovery, but has been charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and with felony eluding, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

His court date was not released.

A source told PotomacLocal.com Allen was shot in his stomach, and that the black BMW that he was driving appeared to have been hit by both shotgun and smaller caliber gunfire.

An ATF spokesman said undercover agents attempted to purchase drugs from the suspect, but the man fled as agents moved in to make an arrest.

Agents chased the suspect to the area of Va. 234 and I-95, stopped him briefly, but opened fire when agents feared the suspect would run them down with his car.

Update 11 p.m.

One man is in the hospital tonight after he was shot by a federal agent.

The unidentified victim tried to sell drugs to undercover ATF agent Monday night, and when other agents moved in to make an arrest the man sped off in his car and police gave chase, officials said.

The pursued the suspect along Dumfries Road (Va. 234) until they came to the intersection of Interstate 95.

Agents were able to stop the man, but not for long as it appeared he would run down the agents with his car, and that’s when they opened fire on the suspect, said ATF spokesman Mike Campbell.

The victim’s condition remained unknown late Monday night.

Campbell said the undercover drug operation took place nearby Dumfries, but wasn’t able to provide an exact address.

The scene of the shooting was extensive, as local police closed a portion of southbound Va. 234 and rerouted cars in both the north and southbound directions on one side of the six-lane highway.

Onlookers peered over toward the scene as undercover federal agents donned in black masks huddled behind police tape.

Campbell said more information about what happened here Monday night would be made available Tuesday.

Woodbridge, Va. –– A woman sitting on her couch in her living room Sunday became the victim of a home invasion.

The 63-year-old was inside her home in the 2000 block of Horizon Court, in the Misty Ridge apartment complex, when she heard her sliding glass door open at 10:05 p.m., and then saw a man come into her home, say police.

The man pulled out a handgun and demanded money, but the woman fought back and struck the man on the head with the gun, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

The man was able to grab the woman’s purse that was sitting on a nearby table and fled the scene.

The victim suffered injuries what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries on her head, and was taken to an area hospital, said Perok.

The intruder is described as black, between 20 and 25-years-old, 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He was seen wearing a black ski mask, dark-colored pants and a long-sleeve shirt.

There may have been puddles dotting the ground but that didn’t keep 108 dedicated egg hunters from Rippon Lodge once the sun came out Saturday.

Rippon Lodge in Woodbridge is one of the oldest remaining houses in Prince William County.

The house was built in 1747 and recently restored and is now open to the public from May to October for both tours and special events, such as the annual Egg Hunt.

Rebecca Super, site manager at Rippon Lodge, says that the annual hunt has been going on for several years and is one of the biggest events they host.  “It’s our first event of the season, and it definitely gets people out”, said Super.

Children were able to hunt for eggs in one of several hunts from 11-3 as well as enjoying craft activities, “colonial games” and exploring the grounds.

For 5-year-old Sarah, who attended with her mother, it was all about the candy. “I want to find all the eggs!!” she exclaimed with excitement minutes before a hunt began.

Rippon Lodge hosts several events during their open season for both adults and children.  Their next childrens event will be a Colonial Game Day on May 14th from 11-4.  The event is $7 for children and free for the accompanying adults.

Salem, Va. –– Looking to take three of four from the Salem Red Sox, the Potomac Nationals surged to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on Easter Sunday. Eleven unanswered runs for the Sox, however, spoiled Potomac’s plans and propelled them to a series-splitting 11-4 win on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in the Roanoke Valley.

Alex Caldera was unable to hold the lead for the Nats; he yielded three runs on a pair of home runs in the second inning and two more Salem runs in the third before he recorded an out. Caldera (0-1, 16.70) was lifted from the game and got the loss.

Ryan Pressly, the Sox starter was just as erratic. He lasted only 2.2 innings but the Sox offense got him off the hook. He gave way to Anatanaer Batista, who was utterly dominant and retired all ten Nationals hitters he faced. Batista got the win to improve his record to 2-0.

Evan Bronson matched wits with Batista and kept it a one-run game until the sixth. Bronson pitched three scoreless innings in his 2011 Potomac debut. Ryan Demmin came on in the sixth, and the game got out of hand. After Michael Almanzar was awarded first base after a pitch appeared to hit his bat (Nationals manager Matt LeCroy was ejected after arguing the call), Demmin got two fly ball outs before things unraveled. A walk to Jeremy Hazelbaker brought Peter Hissey to the plate; he doubled to score two. Kolbrin Vitek then singled to score Hissey, and scored when Reynaldo Rodriguez belted his second double of the game. Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles and two RBI.

The Sox closed out the scoring in the seventh with Michael Almanzar’s controversial home run to left field. The towering fly ball appeared to hook left of the foul poul but was called fair.

With the loss, Potomac falls to 6-9, while the Sox climb to 11-4.

The Potomac Nationals scored their runs by playing small ball. After a one-out walk to J.R. Higley, Brian Peacock singled to right to put runners at the corners. Jose Lozada then executed a perfect safety squeeze to score the game’s first run. Francisco Soriano followed with a bunt of his own down the third base line; Almanzar barehanded the ball but threw wildly into right field, allowing two more runs to score. Jeff Kobernus then hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left that plated Soriano.

Potomac continues their 17-game road trip tonight in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Paul Demny takes the mound for Potomac against lefty Robbie Erlin at 7:05 P.M.
