Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is excited to announce the appointment of William “Jake” Jacoby as the new chief of police.
Jacoby has served as the college’s assistant chief of police for ten years. Following a nationwide search, Jacoby was named to succeed Chief Dan Dusseau, who retired in May 2022.
Jacoby has nearly four decades of police experience in Northern Virginia. He is familiar with the region’s police forces, especially in the leading four jurisdictions where NOVA’s campuses are located.
“The safety of our college community is of critical importance at NOVA,” said John Ferrari, (USA, ret.) NOVA’s new vice president of finance and administration. “With his extensive police background, Jake will ensure that the public safety of the College remains the top priority and that our students, faculty and staff are in the best of hands. Our award-winning police force is proud to continue to serve.”
Before coming to NOVA in 2012, Jacoby retired from the Fairfax County Police Department. While in Fairfax, he served in various senior operational roles. He also served as an assistant station commander, supervising approximately 125 officers and numerous civilians.
Jacoby’s selection followed a rigorous national search with over 50 candidates applying from major urban and rural areas, other colleges and universities, the FBI, and other federal law enforcement agencies.
“NOVA Police is one of the country’s premier college police departments. I intend to enhance the culture of safety established by Dan Dusseau,” said Jacoby. “We will continue to emphasize the professional development and approachability of our police force, and our community outreach efforts to keep our operations transparent and to empower NOVA community members with the information they need to keep them safe, both on and off campus.”
Jacoby likes to travel, play golf, and catch up with NOVA students on the campuses in his spare time.

Southbound Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road) in Stafford County will be reduced to a single travel lane between Heartfields Lane and Washington Street for a road maintenance project.
Work will occur during daytime hours for about two weeks, starting Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Travelers can expect brief delays between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Weather permitting, once crews mobilize Tuesday, work is expected to occur every day until complete, including weekends.
Crews have detected a void underneath the pavement near a previously deteriorated drainage pipe, which has already been replaced. VDOT and contractor crews will drill holes in the asphalt and fill them with grout, which will harden and fill the void.
Motorists can find real-time information on lane closures, work zones, traffic, and other incidents on 511Virginia.
On January 17, 2023, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) voted to approve funding for Phase I of the Route 28 (Centreville Road) Innovative Intersections project from Manassas Drive to Spruce Street in Manassas Park.
The CTB approved over $24 million worth of funding for the Innovative Intersections project. This funding was approved after years of efforts from Delegate Danica Roem (D), the Manassas Park Governing Body, and the Manassas Park Government staff to secure funding to improve Route 28, the city stateed in a press release.
“Innovative intersections” modify the vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle movements at conventional intersections to provide transportation agencies and local communities with new options to reduce delay, increase efficiency and provide safer travel for all road users. They come in various shapes and sizes. Phase I will have a median U-Turn and thru-cut intersections (in addition to traditional enhancements and pedestrian improvements).
According to VDOT, the “thru-cut” intersection is a four-way junction in which two side streets meet a main road, but traffic is prohibited from proceeding through the main road. Instead, traffic from the side road must turn left or right onto the main road.
VDOT cites this type of junction as being safer than a conventional intersection because it presents fewer “conflict points,” or points at which traffic is merging, diverging, or crossing other traffic.
Likewise, the median U-turn – also known as a ‘Boulevard Turnaround’ – is a junction where left turns are prohibited. Traffic intending to make a left must make a right turn and subsequent U-turn at a dedicated median opening. The median U-turn is considered even safer than the thru-cut, as it has four fewer conflict points.
