Manassas City police: “On June 26, [2023], at approximately 10:30 p.m., MCPD responded to a report of a possible overdose in a vehicle. Officer Duck located the vehicle and announced on the radio that he believed the subject was in the throes of a narcotics overdose and that he would need to break the window.”

“The backup officers advised Officer Duck that rescue services were stuck behind a train. Officer Duck recognized the exigency of the situation and, without hesitation, shattered the rear window and gave the subject a dose of Narcan. The subject was transported to the hospital by Fire and Rescue for further treatment.”

NOVEC sponsored Youth Tour students (FROM LEFT) Alexa Zarkauskas, Grace Kestler, Jordan Asinugo and Bora Yoon visited the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC): “Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative sponsored four local high school students for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. from June 19 to 23.”

“They, along with nearly 1,800 other students from across the nation, learned about cooperatives, visited historic sites and museums, and saw the federal government in action.”

The NOVEC-sponsored students were:

  • Jordan Asinugo, of Battlefield High School in Haymarket
  • Bora Yoon, of Battlefield High School
  • Grace Kestler, of Loudoun Valley High School in Leesburg
  • Alexa Zarkauskas, of C. D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge

“During the tour, the NOVEC students had the opportunity to speak with United States Sen. Sen. John Fetterman as well as a staff assistant to U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton of Virginia while touring the US capitol.”

“They also visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, and the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial. They enjoyed The Lion King at the Kennedy Center, a Potomac River cruise, and the National Zoo. All of the NOVEC students said they were pleased with their Youth Tour experience…Applications will open in January 2024 for next summer’s Youth Tour.”

“The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C. for a week in June nearly every year since the late 1950s. Nearly 50,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America have participated in this program since its inception.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments: “The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) has forecast a Code Orange air day for the metropolitan Washington region tomorrow: Wednesday, June 28.”

The COG provides air quality forecasts and educates the public about actions that can be taken to reduce pollution and health risks in the metropolitan Washington area.

”Smoke coming from wildfires in Canada will contribute to the increased levels of fine particle pollution. The Code Orange levels mean the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with heart or lung disease.”

Prince William County Government: “ Prince William County real estate taxes for the first half of 2023 are due on Monday, July 17, 2023. “The Taxpayer Services office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “

Payments can be made by electronic check, online via credit card or by phone, mail, or in person at the Sudley North and McCoart Taxpayer Services offices from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“A late payment penalty of 10 percent will be assessed on the unpaid tax balance if taxes are not paid in full by the due date. Interest at a rate of 10 percent per annum accrues monthly until the balance is paid in full.”

Prince William County Schools E-News: “Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) has appointed Greg Hood as associate superintendent for high schools, effective July 1. Hood will assume this role following the retirement of William Bixby.”

Hood

“As associate superintendent for high schools, Hood will provide support and direction to the 13 comprehensive PWCS high schools, as well as alternative and specialty schools, and athletics and activities, with a total enrollment of approximately 29,000 students. This position serves as a member of the executive cabinet.”

“Hood joined PWCS from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), where he served in several roles during a 25-year career.”

Hood held several roles with FCPS including principal, assistant principal, director of student services, teacher, and school counselor.

Prince William County Public Schools: “Community organizations and business partners of T. Clay Wood Elementary School gathered from near and far to provide an incredible science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) expo for students and families.”

“The goal was to showcase their love for STEAM to elementary school students, and T. Clay Wood Elementary staff members and local partners delivered. The room was divided into different stations dedicated to a portion of STEAM, with hands-on activities for the students.”

Students and staff volunteered to create fun STEAM activities for students and parents, like creating slime and experimenting with how hot cans react to cold water.

“Students involved in different organizations such as the Kettle Run 4-H Club, Girls Scouts, and Boy Scouts of America volunteered and executed a plethora of science activities such as constructing Lego buildings, water cycle in a bag experiment, and marshmallows/toothpick towers to name a few.”

Several community agencies also had booths at the event providing families with information and resources as well.
