Manassas City leaders are at odds over where a new Dean Elementary School will be built.

The replacement school will be built at Dean Memorial Park, on some of the last open spaces in the city, at Wellington Road and Prince William Street. The new school could mean that some amenities like open fields and tennis courts would be cleared to make way for the new two-story school.

The Manassas City Council received an update on its ongoing power woes on Monday, July 17, 2023.

Ongoing power outages have plagued residents over the past few months. The electrical substation at Battery Heights on Liberia Avenue, one of four in the city, is offline.

The three other substations are carrying the load. Diane Bergeron, Finance Director for the city, told the council it wouldn't be sustainable to continue to operate on only three. Meanwhile, the city found a transformer in Pennsylvania and hopes to deliver it by July 27, potentially operational by August 1.

The Manassas City Council pressed for answers about a series of electrical outages in the city.

During its June 26, 2023 meeting, council members focused on problems at the Battery Heights substation, off Liberia Avenue, contributing to the city's recent power woes.

The city's utilities director Tony Dawood said the recent power outages are unprecedented. In the past, the city has been known for its reliable, independent energy supply, not relying on electricity providers Dominion Energy or NOVEC to deliver power to its residents.
