What happens when a multi-sports training facility enters the local business arena?
If it’s Competitive Edge Athletic Performance Center, the whole community benefits -- which is one reason they won the Prince William Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Excellence in Small Business award for businesses with one to ten employees.
Located in Woodbridge, Competitive Edge specializes in training student-athletes looking to improve their sport-specific skills. But these young athletes also train in speed and agility, injury prevention, nutrition and health, developing what Competitive Edge calls “the complete athlete.”

MANASSAS -- A new, three-day multi-media art event, One Love Manassas, will be held in May.
Designed to give artists a platform to perform and share and leverage their art with the greater community, the event is aimed at bringing awareness and inspiring hope for the love of all artistic platforms -- along with spreading a few other messages, according to Ken Moorman, co-owner of Jirani Coffeehouse in Historic Manassas.
“It was the city's desire to have three-day art event and solidify Manassas as an art Mecca of [Northern Virignia]. There are so many artists all around, coming from everywhere, so many levels of artists. They said, ‘Let's solidify it,’” Moorman explains.

The cameras have finished flashing, the festivities at the Hylton Performing Arts Center have long since been cleaned up and everyone is back to work. But for FirstLight Home Care, the Prince William Chamber of Commerce’s Emerging Business of the Year award winner, it is never business as usual.
Based in Woodbridge, FirstLight helps care for seniors, veterans and others with disabilities, and loved ones recovering from surgery. And though they won the Emerging Business of the Year Award, they were also nominated for the Innovative Business of the Year award.
Owners Paul and Renee Jones opened the company in 2016. To set themselves apart, FirstLight leverages technology to increase efficiency. One example is their cloud-based software that gives family members real-time care information about their loved one from anywhere in the world. That’s innovation.

If you live in western Prince William County or Manassas, you’ve either seen it or have been driving with your eyes closed (not recommended).
There it sits, near the corner of University Boulevard and Hornbaker Road in the northwest corner of Innovation Park, Prince William County’s ‘epicenter of burgeoning biotech growth,’ which began around 1997 when the county bought 500 acres in the area.
If nothing else, it’s a survivor - the Birkett Barn.

RICHMOND – The abduction and slaying of a 19-year-old Norfolk woman prompted General Assembly approval of legislation to create an Amber Alert-like system for “critically missing” adults.
The “Ashanti Alert” called for in HB 260, sponsored by Del. Jerrauld Jones, D-Norfolk, was approved by the Senate on Thursday and now awaits the signature of Gov. Ralph Northam to become law.
Ashanti Billie was abducted in 2017 from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, where she worked at a sandwich shop, and later found dead in Charlotte, North Carolina. Because Billie was an adult, she didn’t meet the criteria for an Amber Alert.
