Prince William County Public Schools student talent was displayed at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Youth Oratorical Competition, and Program held virtually on January 16, 2023.

The event is held each year on the MLK holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sponsored by the Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (PWCAC-DST), the student speeches are one component of the celebration, now in its 38th year. The MLK Community Choir, made up of students in grades K-12, added thematic musical selections for the program.

Spanberger delighted over new hospital equipment

On Thursday, January 19, 2023, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) toured Germanna Community College's Virtual Hospital at its Locust Grove Campus in Orange County.

In December, she secured $251,000 to purchase equipment for the Robert C. O'Neill Wellness Clinic. The clinic will be part of a new Frank and Nancy Turnage Health Sciences Building at the Locust Grove Campus.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives offer college, vocational, and trade school scholarships to public, private, and home-schooled high school seniors whose families receive electricity from electric cooperatives. Students may apply to both scholarship programs.

NOVEC and VMDAEC will send scholarship funds directly to recipients' chosen educational institutions for help with tuition, room and board, student fees, or book purchasing.

Prince William Delta Chapter

The Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (PWCAC-DST), in affiliation with the Delta Research and Educational Foundation, will host its 33rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Oratorical Competition and Program on Monday, January 16 at 11 a.m. on its YouTube channel. This is a free virtual event.

This year's theme, "A View of the Promised Land," inspired Prince William area students in grades 6-12 to write and present their views on the life and impact of Dr. King's legacy. The January 16 program will not only showcase six dynamic student orators from Prince William County and Manassas Park it will also feature the MLK Community Choir, students K-12.

The audience will also have an opportunity to vote for their favorite middle school and high school orator using a special text-to-vote feature while watching the program.

Buckman

A student representative sits on the Stafford County School Board for the first time.

During the school board meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, the School Board voted unanimously to appoint its first-ever Student Representatives to the Stafford County School Board. Katherine Buckman, a junior at Mountain View High School, will serve as the primary student representative. In contrast, Miss Maraki Solomon, a Brooke Point High School junior, will serve as the alternate student representative. Both students will serve one-year terms.

OneLife Ribbon Cutting

Onelife Fitness held its Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the grand opening of a 7,000-square-foot expansion at the Stafford location, 315 Garrisonville Road.

The expansion included a new Saltwater Pool, Whirlpool, and an expanded turf functional training area with Explosive Performance athlete training. According to the company, the firm invested $1 million into the North Stafford location.
