- BEACON for Adult Literacy is recruiting teachers and subs for their Spring Session which begins March 18th. Brain Injury Services (BIS) is searching for a volunteer to be a PALS (Providing a Link for Survivors) for a brain injury client who would like to go on occasional fishing trips. PALS is a one-to-one friendship program for brain injury survivors; the program connects BIS clients with volunteers who can help them socialize in the community and rebuild social skills through friendship. - StreetLight Community Ministries still needs volunteers who can provide a nourishing dinner for 30 people each night at the Bill Mehr Drop-In Center, 14716 Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge through March 31. Meals should be prepared at home and provided in disposable aluminum pans or serving trays; drop off is between 6:15pm-7pm only. Desserts and sides are also appreciated but not required. On Friday March 1 at 6 p.m., Osbourn High School hosted their 11th annual Artistic Expressions art show at the newly revamped Manassas Museum.
Inside the museum’s Mae Merchant Hall, selected artwork from various grade levels and mediums was displayed for families and special guests. The artwork ranged from glass paintings to graphite pencil pieces.

A new restaurant is coming to the Manassas area. Freddy’s, a well-known burger and custard joint, aims to open in June 2024. The newest franchise will be built at 8074 Ashton Avenue, at the corner of Sudley Manor Drive.
“Manassas is a vibrant, diverse, and growing area that’s a perfect fit for our brand. Our local community is so important to us—as we’ve gotten to know our neighbors and businesses in the area, we’ve been supporting community clean-up days with a Frozen Custard Social,” explained Manassas franchise owner Beverly Redler.
Their menu includes something for everyone—chicken sandwiches, all-beef hotdogs, cheese curds, shakes, sundaes, and more. Browse through the whole menu here and look for limited-time items throughout the year.
Inside the restaurant, the history of Freddy’s can be found on the walls. Photos of the late co-founder, Freddy Simon, display his years throughout his adolescence, up until serving in World War II, and beyond.

Mary Washington Healthcare: Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) is proud to announce the three-year re-accreditation of Mary Washington Hospital’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Department by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Accreditation was received in all available modules which includes body, cardiac, head, spine, musculoskeletal, and MR Angiography. There were no recommendations for improvement.

Sentara Health: Carol Shapiro, MD, MBA, FACS, physician and director of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center’s Wound Healing Center, was honored with the 2024 Charles J. Colgan Visionary Award from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce on February 23 during the chamber’s annual awards banquet.
The award, named in memory of longtime state Senator Charles J. Colgan, celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions throughout their lives in service to the business community in Prince William County.
With more than 50 years of service in Prince William County, Dr. Shapiro was an original member of the medical staff at Potomac Hospital – now known as Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC). She went on to become the first elected female president of the hospital’s medical staff as well as president at Prince William Hospital.
Dr. Shapiro is a board-certified plastic surgeon who established her practice in Woodbridge and Manassas in 1972 following her training at Georgetown University. Recognizing the opportunity to build a practice in a community that had previously lacked necessary medical services, Dr. Shapiro played an integral role in the development of the healthcare community in Prince William County.
As director of the outpatient Wound Healing Center at SNVMC, she championed the introduction of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services in eastern Prince William County five years ago.
Dr. Shapiro was integral in establishing the gang tattoo removal clinic in Prince William County, generously donating her time and expertise. Her commitment to her profession has included leadership roles with the Prince William Medical Society, the Medical Society of Virginia – where she served as the first woman president – and the American Medical Association, serving as chair of the Virginia delegation from 2007 to 2016.

Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk: On February 14, 2024, the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Jacqueline Smith, administered 23 wedding ceremonies at her 6th Annual Valentine’s Day Wedding Bash, hosted at the ARTfactory in downtown Manassas.
The location provided a unique and picturesque setting for couples to say, ‘I do.’ The building, a local creative arts hub, offered a modern-rustic setting for couples to exchange vows.
Couples walked down an aisle lined with rose petals, which led to a floral arch where their marriage was officially pronounced and sealed with a kiss. They then received photo booth services, individual wedding cookies, and gift bags filled with goodies.
With the help and contributions of the local businesses, the Clerk’s 6th Annual Valentine’s Day Bash was a great success and made a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
