Evelyn Smith Lunsford was born on April 10, 1923 on Sonoma Farm, now Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, VA. She fell asleep in death at the age of 93 at her home on Catharpin Road, April 4, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mode and Leafy Smith; her husband: Floyd Lunsford; brother: Theodore Smith and sisters: Marjorie Smith, and Frances Hunsberger.
She leaves behind two sons: Ronnie Lunsford and Kevin Lunsford (Cindy) ; one daughter: Faye Lunsford; also, one brother: Howard Smith (Helen); one sister: Jean Mountjoy (David). She also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Tina Fogel (Keith), Dawn Bellner, Lisa Bellner, Pam Ward (Willie), Christina Lunsford, Melissa Broyles (Matt), Kevin Lunsford, 14 great grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren; in addition to many nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Evelyn graduated from Haymarket High School in 1940, her first job was for Federal Housing Administration in Washington, D.C., soon after she met Floyd and they were married at Gainesville Methodist Church in 1946. She left Federal Housing and began raising her three children in a home they purchased in Gainesville, after a few years they built their current home in Catharpin, where they lived for 62 years. She began her work as a postal worker in Gainesville in 1965 and retired in 1984.
Evelyn loved people, and many loved her in return. She had a great love for her home town and kept records and pictures of events over the years. Each night before bed she would write in her ledger.
She will be missed by her family and friends who with affection was called Granny and “The Boss”. The family wants to express their love and thanks to Hospice and Diane Porpillo her care giver for the love and care she gave Evelyn.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. John Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at Gainesville United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gainesville, VA.
