Carl Dean Floyd (December 18, 1958 – March 8, 2017)
Carl D. Floyd, 58, peacefully departed this life on March 8th, 2017 at Walter Reed Medical Center. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.
Carl, son of the late Raymond Floyd Sr. and Sallie Mae Floyd, was born on December 18th, 1958 in Garysburg, NC. He graduated from Gumberry High School, Class of 1977, and went on to serve his country in the United States Army.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior, and was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church. Later, he joined River of Grace Lutheran Church, and remained a faithful member.
Carl was married to Phyllis (Anne) in 1983. They are the proud parents of his only child, Cherrice, and remained close friends until his death.
Being a firm believer in education, Carl became a student of Strayer University, where he received his Bachelors in Business Administration. Before he became ill, he worked over 15 years with the Virginia Employment Commission, where he specialized in assisting veterans like himself.
Carl enjoyed many hobbies. Those who knew him often said he “simply enjoyed life”. His smile could brighten a room. His laugh was so joyous, you could hear it from a distance, and it made you laugh. His love for his Washington Redskins was always evident, but it still never came close to the love he had for his daughter and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, as well as four siblings: three brothers, Jessie Lee Odom, Mack Odom, and Edward Odom, and one sister, Annie Marie High.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cherrice Floyd-Cook (Antwoine), and his three grandchildren, Caleb, Cameron, and Elaine; his brother, Raymond Floyd Jr. (Clara) of Hampton, VA; four sisters, Faye Lashley (Titus) of Virginia Beach, VA, Dorothy Mason of Gaston, NC, Pamela Mason (Quinton) of Greensboro, NC, and Kathy Jackson (Michael) of Fredericksburg, VA; a beloved aunt, Maggie Fikes, and uncle, June Fikes; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends; three close friends who were confidants and took care of him until the end, Larry Jones, Craig Turner, and Michael Anderson.
Revelations 21:4 reads, “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Those of us who shared this life with Carl Dean Floyd are hurting now, but he is longer in pain, and we will see him again one day.
Family will receive friends on Sunday March 19, 2017 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Baker-Post Funeral Home and Cremation Center 10001 Nokesville Rd. Manassas, VA 20110. A funeral service will be held at the River of Grace Lutheran Church 15012 Dumfries Rd. Manassas, VA 20112 on Monday March 20, 2017 at 10:00am, with Pastor Connie Thomson officiating.
Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery following the funeral service.

Planet Fitness opened its first location in Stafford. The new 30,900-square-foot facility, located at 1455 Stafford Market Place in the Stafford Market Place shopping center, is designed to provide a welcoming, judgment-free environment for individuals at all fitness levels.
The building used to house a Best Buy that announced its closure one year ago after 16 years in business. Our coverage of the closure was some of the most-read content on Potomac Local News in 2024.
The Stafford location features state-of-the-art equipment, including strength machines, free weights, a dedicated area for high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and a functional training room with turf for agility exercises. Members can also access amenities such as fully equipped locker rooms with showers, a mobility and stretching space, and free WiFi.
A highlight of the facility is the Black Card Spa, available to those who pay for a higher membership tier. The spa includes Hydro Massage Loungers, massage chairs, recovery loungers, and salon-grade tanning beds, offering members an opportunity to relax and recover post-workout.
Called to Jail
A 44-year-old man found himself back at Rappahannock Regional Jail after making a false report and harassing a jail officer with obscene phone calls. Initially, deputies responded to a call about a death and gunshot outside the jail, which turned out to be false. The suspect, located at a local motel, was arrested and charged with using obscene language and filing a false report.
Assault
– Marion Manor Nursing Home: A staff member assaulted another during a disagreement. The suspect was charged with assault and battery and held without bond.
– Shasta Place: A male suspect bit the victim during a verbal altercation. He was charged with assault and battery but released on personal recognizance.
DUI
Deputies discovered a car in a ditch on Courthouse Road. The driver admitted to drinking beer, with three empty cans found in her vehicle. She was charged with DUI, drinking while driving, and refusal, and held on a $3,000 bond.
Hit and Run
A vehicle struck a VDOT sign and two unoccupied trucks at EZ Auto Sales before the driver fled. Deputies identified the suspect using evidence left in the vehicle, and warrants for hit and run and property destruction were issued.
