Thereâs been a shakeup on the Dumfries Town Council.
Incumbent Councilman Charles Brewer will return to dias. Incument Vice Mayor Willie J. Toney and Councilwoman Helen Reynolds will not return to the council.
The biggest vote getters of the night, however, were two new faces that will take their seats on the council for the first time. Melva Willis and Brian Fields, a former Dumfries Police Offficer won over half of the votes cast in Tuesdayâs election.
Brewer earned 23 percent of the vote. Toney had 11 percent of the vote, while Reynolds had about 13 percent.
Town residents also voted to keep thier elections in May by an overwhelming 61 percent. A ballot question gave them the option of moving town elections to every two years in November, said Prince William County Voter Registrar Michelle White.
The move also would have meant all members holding seats on the Town Council would have been up for reelection at the same time. The seats are currently staggered.
The new Town Council will take thier seats July 1.
Tuesdayâs election was overshadowed by Mondayâs news of police charging Mayor Jerry Foreman with petit larceny, accusing him of stealing a campaign sign. That sign belonged to Willie Toney.
