Mr. Fred Grady Church, 67, died Saturday, December 26, 2015, at Tucker Hospice House after many hospitalizations in the past three years, but living with a diagnosis of lymphoma since 2003.
The song by Tim McGraw, “Live Like You Were Dyin” never rang more true than watching Fred live each day to its fullest. He took great joy in worshiping the Lord and studying His word, going to church at CFA, visiting yard sales and flea markets, and planning family vacations.
Funeral services will be conducted in Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Pastor Phil Bennett from CFA will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 pm Tuesday at Lady’s Funeral Home.
Mr. Church was born November 10, 1948 in Jacksonville, FL. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stetson University in 1970, where he also worked on Richard Nixon’s presidential campaign and received an invitation to the Inaugural Ball. He worked as a debate coach at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem where he earned his Master’s Degree.
Upon graduation, he worked as a teacher at Iowa State University, then later worked at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, where he met and married his wife in 1983. The couple moved to Morehead, Kentucky where Fred taught Communications at Morehead State University.
Fred also worked at The Charlotte Observer and Luwa Corporation, both in Charlotte, then finally getting into government work at Cherry Point Marine Base in Havelock in 1991 and lastly transferring to Marine Base Quantico in Quantico, VA, where he completed 23 years of Civil Service with the Marine Corp as the Director of Business Reform.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Clay Church and Frances Myrtle Hooper Church. Also, preceded in death by his brother, Frank Edward Church. Survivors include his wife, Denise James Church and one son, Sean Henry Church of Charlotte.
