Workhouse Arts Appoints New President

John Mason will serve as the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center Interim President. (Submitted)

Lorton, Va. –– A former Fairfax Mayor with a love for the arts will now lead one of the area’s premier arts destinations.

John Mason was elected Interim President and CEO of the Lorton Arts Foundation, which oversees the operations of the Workhouse Arts Center on Ox Road (Va. 123) in Lorton.

Mason succeeds Sharon Mason (no relation) who recently stepped down as president of the organization.

John Mason will oversee all of the planning and operations at the Workhouse, the site of the old Washington, D.C. prison.

Mason founded the Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts, Inc., and is a former Chairman of the Arts Council for Fairfax County and also serves as the president of the Fairfax Symphony.

His appointment also comes with the election of four new members to the organization’s governing board.

Kip Addison of Vulcan Materials, civic leader Sharon Petersen, Fairfax Chamber of Commerce President Jim Corcoran, and Arts Council member Ann Rust have all been elected to the Board.

“These new Board members are all leaders in their own right. They will add new depth of experience and strategy that will build our leadership base throughout the DC metropolitan area and widen our arts offerings,” said Mason in a press release.

A community gathering spot, Congressman Gerry Connolly visited the Workhouse Arts Center two weeks ago to announce the winners of a student art competition, the winners of which will have their work displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
