STAFFORD, Va. – On August 13, a Stafford County Sheriff deputy went to Hope Springs Marina on Hope Springs Lane to investigate a larceny report.
Stafford Sheriff spokesman Bill Kennedy said that the deputy spoke with the 911 caller at the marina who said that 11 separate boats parked in the Marina had been broken into. Kennedy said that a total of 19 batteries were stolen from the 11 boats valued at a total of $2,600. Kennedy further said that the batteries appeared to have been stolen from boats that had been left there for some time.
Kennedy said that the victim had driven one of the boats a couple of days earlier and noticed nothing unusual until before he met the deputy, he went to check on the boat and noticed the wires from the batteries had been cut and the battery was missing. Kennedy said that this prompted the victim to check the other boats.
Each battery costs between $105 – $137, and the missing batteries could be sold for scrap or another boat owner may have taken them for use for other boats, said Kennedy.
The person who stole the batteries had to be knowledgeable of boats and where to locate battery wires, said Kennedy.
