WOODBRIDGE, Va. — There were a few unwanted treasures found in Neabsco Creek last weekend.
About 50 volunteers pulled 76 bags of bottles, cans, 19 tires, two tricycles, a bowling ball, and a whopping 2,180 pounds of trash from the Woodbridge tributary that leads to the Potomac River. The clean-up effort was part of the Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association’s annual Neabsco Creek Cleanup.
Volunteers descended upon Neabsco Creek Court in the Port Potomac neighborhood, which was used for as the center of their clean up effort.
“I started years ago by supplying my own time and bags to clean the woods where Port Potomac housing development is now,” said civic association Board member Lynda Silverstrand
She later brought in the helping hands of the civic association.
“With their help, we have made great progress. Everyone is delighted to join the party and have a fun day of giving back to our community.”
The volunteers for the effort came from the Prince William Trails & Streams Coalition, Mary G. Porter Traditional School, and the Hylton Environmental Club. The Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association focuses on issues of redevelopment, transportation, and the environment in Woodbridge. Any resident, business owner, or non-profit the association at no cost.
Volunteers will once again be on clean-up duty at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 26 for the Route 1 Litter Pickup. They will meet at Virginia Railway Express’ Woodbridge station and begin to pick up trash along U.S. 1.

(AP) — Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Sunday and predicted six more weeks of wintry weather, his top-hatted handlers announced to a raucus, record-sized crowd at Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania.
Phil was welcomed with chants of “Phil, Phil, Phil,” and pulled from a hatch on his tree stump shortly after sunrise before a member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club read from a scroll in which he boasted: “Only I know — you can’t trust A.I.”
At approximately 2:45 P.M. on Saturday, February 1st, units with Stafford County Fire and Rescue (SCFR) responded to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Aquia Creek Road, near Aquia Creek. Callers reported a neighboring residence on fire, and first arriving units marked the scene less than 10 minutes later and confirmed fire and smoke coming from the rear and roof of a single-family residence.
Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, crews had to utilize rural water operations to shuttle water to the scene. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and bring it under control in approximately an hour, despite the roof collapsing.
The residence was not occupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The fire is under routine investigation by the Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office. SCFR units were assisted on scene by Quantico Fire and Emergency Services.
