Lorton, Va. –– Residents are going to have to wait a bit longer to get more information about what’s going to happen with the waste-to-energy center in Lorton.
An information session that was scheduled Thursday night at South County Secondary School was postponed until 7 p.m. February 3.
The postponement comes after snow fell across the region Wednesday.
Fairfax County officials are considering purchasing the facility, and staff members from the county are scheduled to be on hand to discuss the potential purchase.
The I-95 Waste-to-Energy Facility has been the primary waste disposal facility in Fairfax County since 1990. The facility is currently owned and operated by Covanta Fairfax, Inc. The county has a contract with Covanta that expires in 2016 to dispose of waste generated in Fairfax County. Terms of the contract include an option for Fairfax County to purchase the facility. This option has a deadline of April 4 for the county to take action.
