Prince William Schools See Increased Absences, Issue Flu Prevention Tips

MANASSAS, Va. — Cases of flu are problematic in Prince William County schools.

An absentee report maintained by the county school division shows a 10 percent increase in absences at Lake Ridge, West Gate, and Yorkshire elementary schools. While it may seem like a lot, the absence rate is actually an improvement over recent weeks, spokeswoman Irene Cromer said.

The flu has hit Virginia and the rest of the nation particularly hard this winter. The virus is widespread across at least 46 states and has prompted changes to hospital visitor policies in our area and elsewhere.

In schools, administrators have provided tips to parents to help cut down the spread of the virus:

• Keep children home for a minimum of 24 hours after vomiting, diarrhea, or fever;

• Wash hands frequently with soap and water; use an alcohol-based cleaner if soap and water are not available;

• Cover nose and mouth with a sleeve or a tissue when coughing or sneezing;

• Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of germs;

• Avoid close contact with those who have symptoms;

• Seek care for you or your child if needed, and please call ahead to your health care provider’s office to tell them what symptoms you have, so they can see you quickly and prevent exposing other people in the waiting room.

• A bleach solution (one part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water) is the most effective way to kill germs on surfaces.

• Flu season has arrived—make sure everyone is vaccinated, especially those with asthma and other existing health conditions.

Fredericksburg celebrated the grand opening of its new Visitor Center on January 10, 2025, with an open-house event that drew hundreds today at the newly renamed City Center government building, formerly known as the Executive Plaza. Community members gathered at 601 Caroline Street to explore the revamped space, enjoy light refreshments, and learn about the Visitor Center’s offerings.

The new facility, described as brighter and more accessible, provides an inviting hub for showcasing Fredericksburg’s artists and businesses. “The center is fabulous,” said Mayor Kerry Devine. “It has space for showcasing our artists and businesses, and we’re just so excited to welcome people to this new center.”

Rita McClenney, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, emphasized the importance of the Visitor Center as a resource for wayfinding and discovering unique experiences in Fredericksburg. “A lot of people research before they travel, but there’s nothing like being on the ground and finding out about a place through the people who know it best,” said McClenney.
