PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Police in Prince William County asked anyone who saw the fatal crash involving Motor Officer Chris Yung to come forward with details.
Investigators are hoping to learn more about the crash that took the life of the 35-year-old police veteran on New Year’s Eve. Yung was responding to a separate crash with lights and sirens activated on his police motorcycle when he collided with a minivan on Va. 28 and Piper Lane near Manassas. The two occupants inside the van were not injured and no charges have been filed in the crash.
Bystanders were credited in coming to the aid of Officer Yung, including two off-duty fire and rescue personnel from Fairfax County and two citizens, who pulled Yung from the wreckage and began to administer CPR.
Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and that investigators don’t have much information to release. It’s unclear if any video of the crash was captured from a nearby shopping center.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to call Prince William police at 703-792-6500. Yung was honored on Friday during a funeral in Woodbridge a with a cross-county procession that saw residents lines streets from Dale City to Manassas.
In a statement, Prince William police Acting Chief Barry Barnard thanked county residents for their outpouring of support in the days following the fatal crash:
Our County has suffered an immeasurable loss. Officer Chris Yung was the best of all of us. He dedicated his life to serving his country and the wonderful citizens of Prince William County. He inspired us with his warmth and devotion to others; he was truly a remarkable person. Chris’ tragic death has saddened our souls and is very difficult to accept, we have all lost a friend.
You, the citizens of Prince William County, have shown overwhelming expressions of kindness through your commitment to our Department. Your telephone calls, emails, social media post, and the Public Line during the funeral procession for Chris’ last ride has been a huge source of comfort for us. You have shown us that although you may have not known him, you will always remember him.
This solemn, yet inescapable experience has united us in grief. We can never prepare for the emotional trauma or the change in life that follows an unexpected passing of a friend. As we seek to heal our sorrow and face the future without Chris, we are encouraged by your compassion and have drawn strength from your outpouring of support.
