Fans Pack Ice Center to Support Toys for Tots

By KRISTINA SCHNACK KOTLUS

DALE CITY, Va. — The stands were packed at Prince William Ice Center on Saturday afternoon as the National Capital Region “Eagles” Hockey team took on the FDNY “Fire and Ice” at the Dale City ice rink. The “Toys for Tots Hockey Classic” raised money through ticket sales, a raffle, and games provided by Glory Days Grill. Marines were on hand to man stations and hold doors for spectators, as well as to collect toys for the program.

Rink owner Bill Hutzler has been involved with Toys for Tots since purchasing the rink five years ago, and enjoys the fact that it’s been successful.

“The fact that we’re able to raise so many contributions of toys and cash…that provide children with a special treat at Christmas is great” said Hutzler.

In addition to the Prince William Ice Center hosting the event, the Prince William Hockey Club was also on hand with their youngest players providing an exhibition game between periods. Eagles team member Russ Bodine’s son Victor plays for the Prince William Panthers as a “mini-mite,” five and six-year-olds learning the game for the first time. Coach Tom Crosson, who heads club outreach, said that having a family connection made it a natural reason for the club to get involved in the fundraising event. Bodine’s son scored one of the goals in Saturday’s exhibition.

The Toys for Tots Hockey Classic raises between $4,000 and $5,000 each year.

On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, the Stafford County School Board voted 6-1 to approve redistricting plan F1 in preparation for the county’s sixth high school opening this fall. The plan addresses overcrowding and balances student populations across the district’s high schools.

Key Changes Under Plan F1

The approved plan prioritizes reducing capacity pressures at North Stafford High School and maximizing enrollment at Mountain View High School, which has struggled with underutilization. Board members cited geographic challenges and transportation logistics as key considerations in selecting the F1 scenario over others, such as plan E.

North Stafford High School, for instance, would see its projected capacity reduced from 97% to 93%, while Mountain View would experience increased enrollment to maximize its facilities.
