Winter Storm Blair has shifted, causing the snow and ice line to move further south, which has led to an increase in our forecasted snow totals. We now anticipate total precipitation for this event in the City of Fredericksburg to be between 10 and 12 inches. Additionally, winter weather is beginning to impact the area in Southwest Virginia. Our timeline remains unchanged, with the weather expected to start moving into the area around 7 pm to 8 pm.
The Governor of Virginia has declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth, and the City of Fredericksburg has declared a local emergency. The City’s Emergency Services and Public Safety teams will be fully staffed throughout this winter emergency. Staff from all City departments have been preparing for this event. We are asking all members of our community to avoid travel if possible. Please remain alert, practice cold weather safety, and check on your neighbors.
The Public Works staff has diligently worked to apply brine-pavement treatments throughout the City. Almost 3,000 gallons of solution was dispersed. Bridges, overpasses, and some of our roads were treated at least twice. Crews have loaded all available equipment with salt/sand and will begin patrolling their assigned routes at 8:00 pm.
Please allow snow removal crews, debris removal crews, and public safety personnel to respond without unnecessary obstacles. Plowing will begin as soon as streets have accumulated snow. Drivers are asked to stay off of the roads Sunday night and Monday. For those who must travel, the City’s Public Works crews will begin clearing roadways at 8 pm this evening and working throughout the night, prioritizing main roads first, which include Route 1, Route 3, Fall Hill Avenue, Princess Anne Street, Caroline Street, and Lafayette Boulevard. They will move to secondary streets as conditions allow.
On Monday, January 6th, Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) will operate on a 4-hour delay due to inclement weather. Several schools in our region have announced closures and delays for Wednesday, January 8, 2025, due to inclement weather and hazardous road conditions.
Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) announced that transit service, which was suspended on Tuesday due to winter weather, is expected to resume at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8. Residents relying on public transportation are encouraged to plan accordingly and check for updates before traveling.
In addition to transit disruptions, the city’s trash collection schedule has been adjusted. Monday’s missed routes resumed today, and services will shift forward by one day for the remainder of the week. Tuesday’s trash will be collected on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and so on.
The City of Fredericksburg’s Public Works Department continues its efforts to clear snow and ice from roadways. Primary collector roads are reported to be in good condition, but some residential and collector roads remain compacted with snow and ice. Crews are applying plowing and chemical treatments as necessary to address these areas. As temperatures drop overnight, roads may refreeze, and drivers are urged to exercise caution when traveling.
The City also reminds property owners and occupants of their obligation to clear sidewalks adjacent to their properties. Snow and ice must be removed within 12 hours after snowfall ends, or by noon the following day if precipitation occurs overnight or on a Sunday. Sand or abrasives may be used if removal isn’t feasible. Residents and businesses are also responsible for clearing ADA access ramps to ensure safe pedestrian passage.
