Fairfax County, Va. –– One person was killed Wednesday night in crash on Interstate 95 near Springfield.
It appears the driver of an SUV lost control of the vehicle at 7:08 p.m. while traveling north on the highway, near mile post 166. The vehicle was traveling in the far right lane, flipped, and then crossed three lanes of traffic and landed on its top of the Jersey Wall on the left shoulder, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
The passenger was killed instantly, and the driver was flown to a local hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.
There were only two people inside the SUV when it crashed, said Geller.
No other cars were involved in the crash and no one else was injured.
Investigators have not released the victim’s name, as they were still working late Wednesday night to notify the victim’s family.
Following the crash, all northbound lanes of the highway were closed for a brief time as an accident reconstruction team was called to the scene.
The southbound lanes of I-95 remained open during the accident reconstruction, said Geller.
