Prince William County wants to pay panhandlers not to panhandle.
The county announced a new pilot employment program to address the issue of panhandling by providing work and support services to those in need. Set to launch in July or August 2024, the program seeks to employ up to 45 people working up to six hours per week, specifically on Tuesdays and Thursdays, earning $13 per hour, removing litter from roadways.
The county's Public Works crews will oversee operations while the Department of Social Services will manage pay, training, and select the employees. The nonprofit Keep Prince William Beautiful will also assist in the litter pickup.
