’99 Crushers Win 2nd State Title

Submitted By STEVE SHIPP

The ’99 Virginia Crushers fast pitch softball team won their second Virginia state title this past weekend by going undefeated in the 2012 American Softball Association’s (ASA) Virginia State Championship in Leesburg. The Prince William-based Crushers added this title to the Virginia NSA State Championship title they won a few weeks ago in Salem.

The Crushers got started in Saturday pool play at 8 a.m. with a 4-1 victory over the VA Scrappers from Lynchburg, then a 15-0 (3-inning mercy rule) win over the ’99 Sterling Baseliners. Double elimination bracket play started with a come from behind 9-3 win over the VA Edge from Richmond.

The final game of the day started at 8 p.m. against the ’99 Virginia Glory Elite of Lorton. After playing all day in the heat, the Crushers stayed strong and held the Glory to only one hit in the 3-0 victory. The win allowed the Crushers to sleep in before facing the VA Scrappers again in the semi-final game. The VA Scrappers pitching kept the Crushers off balance and the game scoreless until the sixth inning. The Crushers scored two in the sixth and were able to hold on in the seventh to secure the win and earn a spot in the championship game.
