3 Crashes Snarl Drive Home

LAKE RIDGE, Va. — It was a rough commute for those headed south to the Potomac Communities on Monday.

At 4:38 p.m., a crash on the Interstate 395’s High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes at Shirlington caused the closure of the express lanes. Drivers were forced off of the two-lane facility while transit buses were permitted to continue to use the lanes, according to PotomacLocal.com Slug Tales writer Laura Cirillo.

The crash backed up southbound traffic from Shirlington to the 14th Street Bridge on both the HOV and general purpose lanes of I-395.

The lanes were reopened to all southbound traffic about 5:30 p.m. One person suffered injuries that did not appear to be life threatening and was taken to a local hospital, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Further south on I-95 at Occoquan, a crash that involved an SUV slowed the southbound lanes of the highway. The vehicles involved in the crash were moved to the left shoulder and a flatbed truck was called to remove the crashed SUV. It’s unclear if anyone was injured there.

And in Lake Ridge at the intersection of Old Bridge Minnieville roads, another reported crash snarled traffic for drivers who rely on Old Bridge Road to get home. Drivers wanting access to Old Bridge Road were caught in delays that extended onto I-95, and on Va. 123 across the Occoquan River bridge.
