Exclusive: Advocates, VDOT collaborate to restore a nearly forgotten equestrian trail on I-66 at Bull Run

Gainesville District Supervisor Peter Candland (right) tours a newly-restored section of trail along the Bull Run, near the Manassas Battlefield National Park at Interstate 66.

In the effort to add new toll lanes to Interstate 66, a trail used by hikers and horseback riders underneath the highway connecting the Manassas Battlefield to other nearby parks was nearly lost.

The highway is being widened at the Bull Run to make way for new E-ZPass toll lanes, expected to open in December. When engineers were designing the project, they overlooked a trail connecting Manassas National Battlefield Park and the Prince William County trail system, linking users with Mayhew Sports Park and Ben Lomond Park.
