Plans to transform Mathis Avenue, one of the busiest streets in Manassas, were unveiled during a virtual meeting Wednesday.
The city plans to remake a half-mile stretch of Mathis Avenue just outside the city's downtown area, between Sudley Road and Liberia Avenue. The $7 million project aims to replace a center turn that allows drivers to turn in and out of businesses on the street without impeding oncoming traffic with a new landscaped island surrounded by a raised concrete median.
When complete, the stretch of street that sees as many as 11,000 cars per day will be reduced to one traffic lane in both directions. The city does not plan to widen the street.
