Fairfax County, Va. –– A large stretch of U.S. 1 near Ft. Belvoir now being repaved should be finished by early next month, officials said.
The 8-mile, $3.3 million project will see the re-pavement of the road surface between Mount Eagle Drive and Backlick Road in south Fairfax County comes as more than 20,000 jobs are expected to relocate to Ft. Belvoir by September 2011.
Work to repave the road began in early August, and it’s expected to be finished by the first week of August, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer McCord.
Weather at times has stalled the project, as the original completion date was scheduled for the end of October, said McCord.
The work comes as Fairfax officials say they have done their part to help revitalize the corridor, like developing a connector bus service and maintaining sidewalks.
But more needs to be done, said Lee District Supervisor Jeff C. McKay.
“We need state funding for a transit study and then a state and federal commitment of the funds necessary to extend Metro to the highway. Fairfax County has already made a transit commitment: We’ve established the REX Connector bus service, and committed to a long-term investment in sidewalk and streetscape improvements (usually a state responsibility) for the length of Route 1, a multiyear, $55 million ongoing county and federal investment,” stated McKay in an email.
He heralds the re-paving of the highway as a major step in the right direction.

Fredericksburg celebrated the grand opening of its new Visitor Center on January 10, 2025, with an open-house event that drew hundreds today at the newly renamed City Center government building, formerly known as the Executive Plaza. Rita McClenney, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, emphasized the importance of the Visitor Center as a resource for wayfinding and discovering unique experiences in Fredericksburg. “A lot of people research before they travel, but there’s nothing like being on the ground and finding out about a place through the people who know it best,” said McClenney.
