Could Prince William County become the next Loudoun County, which, with the most data centers in the world, handling most of the world's web traffic, is the home to the modern internet?
On Tuesday, the county's staff will ask the Board of County Supervisors for permission to examine ways it can expand the area in which data centers are allowed. Dubbed the data center overlay district, these centers, or server farms, are currently allowed in areas around the Manassas Regional Airport, along Route 234, along Interstate 66, on Route 234 at Independent Hill, and in the area of Caton Hill and Telegraph roads in Woodbridge, near I-95.
In March, Supervisors asked county staff to review and amend the existing Data Center Opportunity Zone Overlay District and explore how new data centers may be built. Historically, they're known for taking up lots of land but providing few jobs. The centers do generate new large tax revenues for the county, and that number is expected to grow in the coming years after Supervisors hiked the tax last month.
