Fire, Water Rescue all in a Days Work in Falmouth

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — It was a busy night for rescue crews in Falmouth who helped pull three stranded swimmers to safety.

Rescue volunteers from the Falmouth station were called about 8 p.m. after three swimmers became stranded in the Rappahannock River on a rock about 40 feet from shore. After speaking with the victims, crews learned they were not injured.

Volunteers then Rescue crews went into the water, reached the victims, placed floatation devices on them, and helped them safely back to shore, said Stafford County Fire and Rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.

Those rescued chose not to be taken to a hospital afterward.

But as that scenario was wrapping up, crews were called into nearby Spotsylvania County for another water rescue, according to the station’s Twitter feed.

This time, three people had become stranded in a body of water. Rescue crews initially found the first two, and then found a third person – who was later taken into police custody – a short time later, the Twitter feed stated.

In all, fire and rescue crews at the Falmouth station on Thursday answered 21 calls for service in a 24-hour period; include a garage fire earlier in the day on Marshall Place in Stafford County.
