Crash, Foot Pursuit Lead to Arrest

Stone

North Stafford, Va. — Two deputies and a retired law enforcement officer at right place at the right time all chased down a Dumfries man.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of a crash at 11:35 p.m. Saturday, at the intersection of Va. 610 and the Stafford Marketplace shopping center in North Stafford after two cars, an Acura and Cadillac Escalade, collided on the six-lane road. Both cars were so damaged the road a portion of the road was shut down, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.

Witnesses told deputies that the driver of the Cadillac was seen fleeing the scene of the crash on foot, headed to the nearby Wendy’s restaurant. A deputy took off on foot toward the restaurant and noticed someone running alongside him, said Kennedy.

It turns the man alongside him was a retired police officer who joined the foot pursuit for the man. The deputy and the retired officer were joined by another Stafford deputy and all eventually caught up with the suspect arrested him, said Kennedy.

Deputies took the man to a hospital because he did not appear to be aware of where he was, and would not give arresting deputies his name, said Kennedy.

Later, after he was released and taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail for processing, the man told deputies his name, said Kennedy.

Allen Stone, 26, of Chesapeake Drive near Dumfries, is charged with felony hit and run, drug possession, and with resisting arrest, said Kennedy. Deputies field tested a substance found on the suspect and it tested positive as being cocaine, said Kennedy.

The occupant of the Acrua suffered injuries that did not appear to life threatening. The closed portion of Va. 610 was reopened following the sheriff’s office investigation.
