Stephen M. Hill

Stephen M. Hill, age 76, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2019 at his residence in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Born in Cranston, Rhode Island on March 29, 1943, Steve was the son of the late Henry and Ruth (Metcalf) Hill. He is survived by four children: Stephen Jr (Michelle), Kevin, Todd, and Ryan. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Marina, Morgan, Ilaria, Braeden, Fiona, Conlan, and Makenzie. He was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Mary Hayward (Roberts) Hill.

Steve served honorably in the United States Army for 22 years, serving two tours in the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. He grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island and graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1965 with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management. His favorite semesters included courses in business law, which later led him to a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Louisville in 1981 and subsequently becoming a member of the Florida Bar Association.

He believed his life was also shaped by friends and events in ways more than coincidences could explain. Upon graduation from URI, he met John Napper from Florida, which would develop in what would become a life-time friendship. In 1969, John introduced Steve to his sister-in-law, Mary Hayward, whom he’d marry 16 months later at Fort Benning, GA. While on their honeymoon in 1970, he met Pedro Mandoki, whom 35 years later would hire him to a position in Gulf Shores, AL. There were several additional friends and events along the way who propped him up during transitional and uncertain times who enable Steve to remain devoted to supporting his family with love and stability.

Funeral services will be held at a date yet to be determined, for burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. Arrangements are entrusted to Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, 3200 Golansky Blvd, Woodbridge, VA 22192. (703) 878-2273.
