Inaugural Dumfries Mayor’s Ball raises $40,000 for education

DUMFRIES — The first annual Dumfries Mayor’s Ball was a success.

The event hosted by Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood supported education, and raised a total of $40,000 in college scholarship funds for area students pursuing business administration or information technology degrees from IGLOBAL University in Vienna, or a degree in the hospitality management, business administration, healthcare administration, or cybersecurity from any Stratford University campus in Virginia.

Students seeking to pursue these degrees at these universities are encouraged to apply for a scholarship before May 15. There’s also an additional $2,000 in scholarship funds that were raised that can be used at any university, added Wood.

“Looking back on the Mayor’s Ball, I know now that it was a historic event for the Town of Dumfries,” said Wood. “People got dressed up and didn’t go to DC, Ft. Belvoir, Arlington, or the Clubs on Quantico, the came to the Town of Dumfries and celebrated our community and we raised money to send youth to college.”

The ball was held Friday, April 19 at the Fabriek Event Center on Possum Point Road in Dumfries. A total of 150 people attended.

Wood said no taxpayer money was used to pay for the ball. Much of the costs were covered by the attendees bought tickets to attend the event.

The next Dumfries Mayor’s Ball is scheduled for March 28, 2020.
